Looks Like No Action Will Be Taken On The Ovechkin Hit

via Tarik El-Bashir of Capitals Insider,

Alex Ovechkin won’t be suspended or receive an additional fine by the NHL for his hit on Buffalo’s Patrick Kaleta on Wednesday night, I’m told.

After the Caps’ 2-0 victory over the Sabres, Ovechkin said he won’t let the ejection - the second of his four plus seasons in the NHL - affect the aggressive manner in which he plays the game.

“I can’t do nothing about it,” he said. “I just play my game. I’m not going to change. It’s me.”

Oh, look at that.  The NHL’s double-standard rears its head again.  Ovechkin deserved to be booted out of the game, he came across the ice to pound Kaleta into the boards (and let me point out, I love Ovechkin), and he also deserves a suspension.  As Georges Laraque asked after he was given 5 games for his knee-on-knee hit (a deserved suspension) on Niklas Kronwall, would Kronwall have been given 5 games if it went the other way?  Of course not.  The NHL protects its stars from discipline, as we saw with Mike Richards.  This is embarrassing for the league and for hockey, especially given all the public talk about head shots, hits from behind, and so on.  A 1 or 2 game ban for Ovechkin would have sent a very strong message to the rest of the league.

His deed was deservedly punished at the game according to the rulebook, and I think it was in borderline suspension territory. But the lack of suspension wasn’t a gross miscarriage of justice by any stretch of imagination.

Maybe not the dirtiest, but without a doubt the most reckless…

I actually think this is the right call. The guy got hurt on a play that the ref determined to be a foul, meaning it should have been a game misconduct, which they called. But beyond that, it wasn’t really a dirty hit and wasn’t really worth anything else.

As others argued in the other post, whether or not it was even a foul was questionable, but that was the refs call. I think the NHL got this one right.
