Luongo Out

via the Vancouver Province,

The Vancouver Canucks will be without their best player, goaltender Roberto Luongo, for an undetermined number of games after he suffered an undisclosed injury during Tuesday night’s game against the Detroit Red Wings.

The Province will publish more details as soon as we know them

added 2:48pm, The Province has updated the same link, but really nothing new, stating the Canucks have not released anything yet.

added 3:22pm, TSN says hairline rib fracture, out at least a week.

added 3:20pm, TSN (same link) has updated and stated Luongo suffered the injury when facing the Leafs on Saturday and re-agravate it when in a collision with Betruzzi last night.

added 4:21pm, via the Vancouver Canucks,

Goaltender Roberto Luongo will not make the trip to California for the team’s back-to-back games this week as he suffered a hair line fracture to his rib midway thought Saturday’s game against Toronto.

“It happened in the third period against Toronto,” explained Luongo. “It was a band angle shot. I went one knee down against the post and the puck hit me just hit me in the seam of my chest protector. The next day was a bit uncomfortable but I was able to play through it without any problems. Just last night, during the first period it aggravated itself, not on a particular play, it just gradually got worse.”

With no clear time line for Luongo’s return, backup goaltender Andrew Raycroft will get his first start between the pipes Thursday against Los Angeles.

The Canucks are expected to call up Manitoba Moose Goaltender Cory Schneider.

Awesome.  I now have a fantasy team with no less than *EIGHT* players injured, and we’re not even a month into the season.

At least now i can sit him and not be afraid he’s going to rip off 6 Shutouts in a row just to spite me.

Watching the game last night, the only thing I can think of was after Bertuzzi ran into Roberto, he was flexing I believe his right arm/shoulder.

Other than that, can’t really recall anything else.

Ten to one Luongo was hurt when his defenseman slammed Bertuzzi into him. His right arm/shoulder was caught between Bert and the post and he did a lot of flexing of it after the play was whistled dead.

As far as injuries in general are concerned, Ken Daniels noted last night that over 100 guys have been injured so far this season. That’s one in eight guys who’ve missed time because of an injury.

He’s their “best” player...? That doesn’t say much about Vancouver. Doesn’t say much about Luongo, either.

This coming from a fan of a team whose fanbase thinks Milan Lucic is one of the biggest stars in the NHL?

he is our best player, just not this season so far.  Hopefully it is not prolonged, and we can weather the storm

Watch Raycroft come in a tear it up… can’t see it happening but stranger things have happened I guess.

Primis - yea we have a guy in our of our pools who has 6-8 guys out as well… what are the chances.... and so many big names.

Kevin - are you saying Luongo is no good?  Really?  Seriously man, he is one of the if not the best goalies in the league.  Yea yea I know Thomas won the Vezina… he’s good too wink

Funny, looking at the box score I don’t see any penalties on the wheel for goaltender interference.  Now there’s a shocker!

Lucic is way way overrated but that’s due to the Canadian hockey experts. He is a very average player overall. Luongo has just never won anything. He stunk in New York and Florida. He uses giant equipment and still chokes regularly

It’s not a shocker at all, Hater. That’s because there was no goalie interference. Luongo’s own defenseman drove Bertuzzi into him and knocked him against the post. At the time, it looked like it was his arm and shoulder that got pinned in there but apparently it was his side that took the force of the blow.

OTC,

My bad.  I didn’t see the play and I’ll take your word for it.  My opinion was conditioned by the 5 or 6 goalie interferences the wheel got away with in the Can last Saturday.

Is it just me, or are officials just not calling goaltender interference this season?  Seems like a dangerous trend.

luongo did not stink in either newyork or florida.  The only reason Florida won any games was becasue of luongo at the time. Florida was a horrible team in general, and the fact that he had one of the top save percentages and gaa in the game during his time in florida is no fluke.  Luongo faced the most shots in the NHL for like 3 consecutive years while playing in florida.
