Luongo A Vezina Candidate

from Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province,

Vezina voters (NHL general managers) are loath to support upstarts and tend to vote for established stars. None of the established powerhouses—including Miikka Kiprusoff, Henrik Lundqvist and Martin Brodeur—is having a powerhouse year (at least not statistically).

And that’s opened the Vezina door to Luongo, whose up and down season has been nothing but up for two months.

The remarkable 18-4-1 run he’s on leaves him with a 29-11-6 record. That’s just six fewer wins than he had all of last year when he played 26 more games.

“There are a lot of reasons, and many things have had to go well to go on a run like this,” Luongo said.

Hmmmm. I want to agree because Luongo has had a great year when he is playing but I am frightened for Luongo and a few other great goalies who have stayed healthy all year and had great seasons like Backstrom and Chris Mason.  There are some key stats they look at, wins generally one of them; BUT it is even more important to note that they would be hard pressed to put three goalies from the same conference, let alone two from the same primarily Canadian dvision in the running for the Vezina.

From the east at the very least one of Lundquist, Ward, and Thomas has to be there.  Out west (away from the media) you have Kipper (43W/71GP), Nabokov (only 9 losses/.912SV%), and Backstrom (66 Games played/.922 SV%).  The upper hand for Luongo may be the Canucks making the playoffs, however, his numbers are basically identical to Chris Mason (who has 3 more SO and is in the playoffs) and Pekka Rinne so if Nashville squeeks in how do you have to make a case that he was somehow better than him too.

Its a long shot but if he is in I like his chances of winning - and that is a saying something because I am a Flames fan.
