Luongo Will Earn His Pay

from Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province,
Every time Luongo would have a game in which he wasn’t miraculous, out would come the usual charges that he’s never won anything, never committed to any organization, didn’t or might not like the city, wants to be dealt to Montreal or isn’t good enough.
Further, there is the Ken Holland strategy always lurking in the background whereby because Detroit has had the mainstay of their resources tied up in defenceman Nick Lidstrom, who is utterly dominant at his position, that a team might not be able to win with a goaltender being highly paid and the dominant player on a roster.
We’ll see how the Wings and this view of the world make out when Lidstrom retires.
And every time one of these skeletons would come out, it had to bother Luongo, who is sufficiently passionate about playing the game that he was named captain of the Canucks even though it was somewhat inconvenient for the team to do it.

to be fair, the author isn’t predicting the downfall of the red wings dynasty there, he is simply questioning whether the detroit model of fairly cheap, but not quite, how to put this tactfully, ‘elite’ goaltending can be successful without having one of the three best defenseman of all time as protection. contrasting this slight uncertainty with vancouver’s absolute confidence in having the best goalie in the league, locked down for the next decade.
that said, the wings look pretty secure with kronwall, ericsson and kindl on d, plus larsson and mccollum in net, for the foreseeable future… should be contending with vancouver and anaheim for the western conference for many years to come.

Elite career 89% SV% 3.36 GAA in the second round? I’ll side with the Wings front office and Ozzie on this one.

Nicely said Fredster; I purposefully misread the line to fit my own agenda. And although I agree that our D-crops looks solid, the thought of a team without King Lidas makes me poop my pants.

And a team without The Captain soldiers on. At least we had previews of the Dynasty without The Captain during the last couple of seasons he played.
There’s little chance of Lidas hanging them up after this season bar injury or the best case scenario of Gold in Vanvoucer and a Silver Chalice in June.

Change a word and suddenly its 5 years ago. Same lines, same gloom and doom, same Dynasty.
Hit the nail on the head before I could, Osrt.
Remove Yzerman from Detroit… and Detroit still had a bunch of really good players. Remove Nick… and Detroit will still have a bunch of really good players.
Remove Luongo from Vancouver and I’m sorry… but you don’t have anything left.
