MacLean & McCown Go At It

from Bruce Dowbiggin of the Globe and Mail,

The surprising news that former Columbus Blue Jackets general manager Doug MacLean was joining forces with Jim Balsillie, whom he had roundly criticized the past year, prompted an acrimonious radio interview between MacLean and radio host Bob McCown on yesterday’s edition of Prime Time Sports.

McCown had spent the better part of two hours ripping MacLean for what he characterized as an opportunistic move before bringing him on the show.

After deliberately calling the veteran radio host “MacGowan” during the interview (McCown riposted by calling him “Mac-Kleen”), a pugnacious MacLean accused McCown of backstabbing him. “It’s not unlike you when someone’s not in the studio to battle you face to face that you’re at your best. … For you to say it’s suicidal for me [to join Balsillie] with the NHL … it was suicidal for me with the NHL when I became a friend of yours.”

Not a McCown fan, but MacLean is a total ass and proved it on this show. The Gameplan has been a Balsillie Bashfest for a year now, he changes his mind when Balsillie asks to speak with him, and McCown called him out. Rather than talk civilly, MacLean shows his true intelligence level insulting, mocking and interrupting McCown. Bob is normally very arrogant but in this interview he truly gave MacLean a chance to have a civil debate and discussion, but Doug totally embarrassed himself in this one.

It is not hard to understand why MacLean is not in the NHL, and likely never will be again.  I have not watched Hockey Central since MacLean was hired, and will not again until he is fired.

I think Bob can be kind of an ass at the best of times. But he was definitely the bigger man in this interview. MacLean was obnoxious and didn’t give bob the time of day.

It’s a shame he won’t be on PTS anymore. I actually enjoyed MacLean but yesterday he dropped down in my books.

I am a PTS fan , and find that he is the only one on that whole station that has the onions to call someone out on something as hypocritical as this.  McLean should take some advise from a very wise man , Winston Churchill , who said , “It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool , than to open your mouth , and remove all doubt”
