Malkin Plus/Minus Talk

from Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburg Tribune-Review,

With Evgeni Malkin a minus-10 over the past 18 games and a minus-5 for the season — which ranks 629th in the NHL — Bylsma was asked if Malkin’s two-way play has been addressed.

“Sometimes, the statistics can be deceiving as to how a player is playing,” Bylsma said. “I think since the break, he’s come out with a rejuvenated effort in terms of playing on both sides of the puck and playing away from the puck. He’s outstanding with the puck — he’s dynamic with the puck — but sometimes he wants to go get it and have it at all times and keep it at all times.”

Bylsma credited Malkin with improving his play on defense, playing away from the puck and his management of it in the offensive zone. Bylsma said Malkin’s past six games — in which he is minus-4 — “have been probably his best away from the puck and managing the puck all year long.”

Malkin played the same way during the Olympics. When Russia played Canada, he turned the puck over and Canada went down and scored. On the replays you could see Malkin loafing back. If he’d a skated hard on the backcheck he would have been able to stop that goal from happening, because he was only 4 ft away from the guy who put the puck in the net.

Crosby is the same way. They’re like roller hockey players. Thats why these guys are not elite players IMO. Look at Yzerman. He was the same way until Scotty Bowman came to town. Sakic fits that same mold as well. Ovechkin is starting to get it too, but sometimes he’s just out of control.

Malkin has had some difficulty with defence, and probably one of the reasons why he was paired with Staal a few weeks ago, ie. adding some defensive awareness. The current Russian/Ukrainian line of Malkin, Fedotenko, and Ponikarovsky doesn’t look like a defensive match in heaven, but they’ll probably get a chance to improve.

Despite the fact that Crosby is responsible for supplying most of the offence, he’s been defensively responsible as well. Not exactly a Selke candidate, but far better than Malkin and Ovechkin. Therefore, ME, he is an elite player.
