Nick Kypreos was just on Fan590 in Toronto and stated Ryan Malone has been telling people that Columbus, along with Toronto is one of the teams he does not want to play for. Nick feels Columbus is just trying to show an effort to sign a player.
Take it as you wish....

Left wing Ryan Malone said Tuesday he plans to opt for free agency—a significant blow to the Penguins’ chances of trading him for a pick in this weekend’s NHL Entry Draft.
“We will not talk to anyone until July 1,” said Malone, who will become an unrestricted free agent on that date.

Last week Kypreos said that Malkin was telling people he wanted a ten year deal at cap max. The next day Malkin said he wanted something close to what Crosby got for no more than six years.

If I’m Malone I’m not negotiating with Columbus (or any other team) until July 1. Why listen to just one team’s offer when up to 30 teams are stocking up to spend, spend, spend in just two weeks?
I doubt Kypreos has an inside scoop or anything, but the logic behind it is at least solid.

“...Columbus is just trying to show an effort to sign a player.” Our season ticket bills were due three months ago, WTF good is “showing effort” to sign a player at this point of the off-season?
Besides, if you’re a fan o’the Jackets, MacLean showed plenty of effort in the papers...time for some results.

Malone is going to FA, he won’t be traded.

Yeah, this story is a little stinky. Aside from that, I have always wondered what the hell players are thinking when they sign for teams that have a consistent record of failure. It makes no sense...Adam Foote going to the BJ’s always confused me.
Malone is best served trying to stay with the Pens or finding a home as the winger on a high powered second line. Detroit, the Rangers, Anaheim, San Jose, Dallas...these are all good fits. I think Dallas and Detroit may be the only teams with room under the cap.

We (Wings) would love to have Malone, but there is plenty of depth to sort out. There have been calls for a second line shooter at A2Y, and he’s not that.
Why would you lowball Malone like that? He’s a championship guy and I hope, for his sake, that he ends up on a good team.

Yes. Come to Boston. Columbus won’t be in the league in another couple years. Plus those uniforms are ridiculous. Seriously why talk to one team when you can talk to all of them. It’s not like Columbus is anywhere anyone would want to play.

“Aside from that, I have always wondered what the hell players are thinking when they sign for teams that have a consistent record of failure.”
A relatively young free agent like Malone might well prefer to be a major part of turning a struggling franchise like Columbus around, becoming a big part of the team’s history in the process, than to be a minor cog in an already successful team. Though Malone to CBJ is a poor fit for that, because (a) Columbus already have Rick Nash, a similar (but better) player and (b) Malone isn’t really good enough to be a key player in turning a team around.

Why the hate? I’m no fan of the BJs but they seem to have a strong following in Columbus, and have put down good roots with youth hockey (the junior BJs in the USHL for example). With Howson and Hitchcock on board they seem to be heading in the right direction on the ice as well, and that can only be good news for the fans and the NHL. And the new unis are actually quite nice… at least they got rid of that cartoon bee thing!

I’d say Malone has already been part of turning the Penguins around. Now, it appears he’s looking to get paid.

As I suspected… the Pens windows is now slowly closing…
And kevin… why would anyone want to play in BOS any more than CBS?

Columbus vs Boston? Please..Columbus isn’t even a city...it’s a town. As for hockey..the Bruins are still better than the Blue Jackoffs which says alot about he state of Columbus hockey
