Maltby Knows The End Is Getting Closer

from Chris McCosky of the Detroit News,

“I know I am a lot closer to the end than I am the beginning,” he said after a conditioning skate Thursday. “But this isn’t something I am going to address this year. I love playing. I love coming to the rink. Listen, if my career would have ended two or three years ago I wouldn’t have had any regrets.

“But I am going to just see how things hold up from a physical standpoint; see how I feel injury-wise. There’s always going to be a time (to leave); everyone has to move on. Whether it’s after this year for me, we’ll see.”

To measure Maltby’s on-ice effectiveness by his statistics is to completely miss the point of his value. He’s a grinder, a dependable defensive-minded winger who’s has long been on of the game’s effective pests

I think both Malts and Homer are going to get plenty of rest during the regular season. If that means they’ll be in good (“great” is too much to hope for) shape for the playoffs next spring, it’ll be a huge plus for the Wings. And despite Tick Tock’s high praise, I don’t think anyone seriously thinks Kirk will be back next year.

When you have a winning program, I guess I am just real slow to change because these guys know how to win.

Cue the Pens trolls to jump in with: “WE WON CUP. WE WON CUP. WE WON CUP.” It’s sad that they never did learn how to enjoy that win this summer.

You have your two or three weeks to take off. You have plenty of time to go back and see family and friends. I don’t want summer to be any longer.

And that, folks, is why Hank will be the next Wings captain. Other teams (*cough*Pittsburgh*cough*) should be so lucky. smile
