from Stan Fischler at the Hockey Journal,
• In the view of some analysts, Mario Lemieux is getting off easy with his demand that his Penguins get a new arena or go bye-bye. “If his club could sell out The Igloo every night of the season – and it could with Crosby and Malkin – he could make enough dough to say,” one observer of the NHL fiscal scene opines. “Sure Mario would make more with a new building and all those luxury boxes but he’s just being greedy. The Penguins could survive right where they are now – if Lemieux was really interested in keeping them in Pitt.”
• Commenting on the NHLPA upheaval, Bill Wirtz tells us that the Union would benefit from studying the good side of Alan Eagleson’s Association leadership: “Alan Eagleson put it in the union constitution that the players must be issued annual financial statements certified by PriceWaterhouse….

Ah yes, Stan, “the good side of Eagleson’s leadership”. Such as siphoning away money from their pension plan to line his own pockets. And denying injured players their full insurance benefits. And cutting sweethearts deals with the team owners to the detriment of the players salaries. And channelling Canada Cup revenues away from the players pension fund and into his own pocket. And screwing Bobby Orr over after using him as his meal ticket.
Yes, there’s so much the PA could learn from a convicted felon!

Hey Paul, you wondered how some in the MSM who’d dismissed the dissident players and supported Saskin would spin the latter’s apparently downfall. The Maven is stuck in the spin cycle!

So, Chris Chelios is a tool of some player-agent-to-be-named-later and is being manipulated into this controversy from behind the scenes to pave the way for the ascendancy of said agent to the leadership of the union?
Okay…..Someone has been reading too many conspiracy novels, methinks.

Surely there must have been a time when Fischler was good? Back in the 60’s, maybe?
I’m all for respecting my elders, but jeez. Stan is like a crazy old uncle who nobody wants to sit next to at Thanksgiving dinner.

“Some analysts” just isn’t a good enough source for me, when nearly every other published report to date talks about how Melon Arena is inadequate as both an entertainment venue and a revenue source. If the Penguins leave town, Mario won’t be blameless, but he should shoulder far less blame then the politicians he’s tried to deal with.

“Some analysts” is Fischler’s way of hiding his own opinion.

Ol Stan needs to listen to different people. Mario was owed money from his last contract and took the option to buy into the team. He has waited over 7 years to get the money owed him. wonder what the interest is by now. this is one Pittsburgher who thanks Mario for all he has done for this franchise.
