Mario Silent

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

The Hall of Fame captain of the Pittsburgh teams that won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992, and who later revived a franchise that seemed destined to wither on the vine in Pittsburgh, maintains his self-imposed media blackout even though his team is in the finals for the first time in 16 years.

When requests are made to talk to Lemieux, either in a one-on-one setting or in a group format with reporters covering the finals, word politely comes back through the team that the man who is the Penguins’ part-owner doesn’t want to take the spotlight away from his young team.

What a load of hooey.

This has nothing to do with taking any spotlight away from his players. They have been playing in the spotlight for weeks now. And since Sidney Crosby became a Penguin three seasons ago, the spotlight has never been far from this Penguins team.

Damn. That stings to read, even as someone that’s not a Pens fan.

Yeah. And it’s especially weird after Burnside’s column before Game 1. Wasn’t he the one who came out hoping for the Penguins to basically dance in the ashes of the Red Wings demise (slight exaggeration)?

more reason to avoid ESPN for any true hockey coverage

That was bitter.  I’m not even a big Mario fan, and I had to say “Ow” at that column.

Maybe that’s going to be the lasting image and memory of this Cup Finals—Therrien complaining about the officiating, Lemieux refusing to deal with the media, and Gary Roberts punching Franzen in the head after returning from PCS.

I doubt it.  It’s a possibility right now though, and if nothing else that should scare the Pens into straightening up.  They don’t want to be known as, worst-case, the team that got their afts handed to them and acted like clowns the whole way.

Burnside sounds like a guy who asked a cheerleader out on a date, got rejected, and is now calling her a slut.

Dumb article.

Yeah, this sounds like a personal vendetta thing, and should not have been written.  It reflects poorly on the author.
cool hmm

Even as an anti-Penguin Wings fan, I can’t help but agree with the 116 others who’ve reacted against this self-important media puppet.  Burnside, you need to learn that your pompous chastisements reveal ever so much more about you than they do about Mario.  Next time, instead of flinging it at others, I recommend you gulp back down the putrid dung that rots inside the bitter disappointment that is your life.
