from Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette,
Defenceman Andrei Markov will not be the next captain of the Canadiens.
The Gazette has learned that Markov, who wore an “A” on his jersey as one of the assistant captains last season, was asked whether he wanted to wear the “C”, but told the Habs he wasn’t interested.

Only in Montreal could a player be offered the “C” but say “No thanks”.

What’s wrong with turning down something you aren’t comfortable with? After seeing how much crap Koivu had to deal with on the language issue, he’d have to be crazy to take that on.
Some Montreal fans probably wouldn’t be satisfied with anything less than Vincent Lecavalier as the captain, and anyone else is going to get nothing but grief.

I don’t have a problem with it, but that’s a discussion that would’ve been better left in the coaches office. It’s the kinda thing that could start a public firestorm, and that team is constantly under enough pressure and scrutiny.

I’m a Montrealer and a Habs fan and I have no problem with this. He’s a very quiet introspective person, why the hell would he want to be part of the circus? He does his job very well, he doesn’t owe us anything more than that.
I agree that the story never should have seen the light of day. I’m getting discouraged by the insanity that surrounds this team all the time, it’s surreal.
