via TSN, The Philadelphia Flyers have nullified the trade they made on March 4 for defenceman Kyle McLaren. The 31-year-old did not pass his physical, according to Flyers GM Paul Holmgren.
McLaren had been sent to Philadelphia from San Jose in exchange for a sixth round pick at this year’s draft.

Sharks update: McLaren trade nullified because of hand injury…
First, news: Kyle McLaren is once again a Sharks as the trade to Philadelphia has been nullified. McLaren has been bothered by a hand injury suffered in a December fight and the Flyers indicated he did not pass the physical that was a condition of the deal. At this point, the plan is to have McLaren continue his rehab work, then go back to Worcester. He could conceivably play for San Jose in the post-season, where the salary cap does not apply.
Not he contradicts the TSN article and states that KMac is headed back to Woostah

There was a big NBA trade a few weeks ago that was nullified because of a failed physical. Tyson Chandler form New Orleans to OKC, I think. It happens every once in a while. Can’t say the last time it happened in the NHL.

Most of the players in professional leagues have chronic injuries which would enable teams to fail them. But it rarely happens, only when teams find out something new about the injury, or when they change their mind and the real injury exists, like with McLaren.

Just to add: dropping players because of physicals makes teams unpopular, so something like that is done rarely.

Out of curiosity, how often does this happen (it’s the only occurrence I can remember)? Also, does anyone know why Philly traded for him in the first place? Did they actually want him for the NHL club?
