via SportsBusiness Daily,
Versus earned a 0.62 overnight Nielsen cable rating for Game One of the Senators-Ducks Stanley Cup Finals on Monday night, down 28.7% from a 0.87 for Oilers-Hurricanes Game One last season. The net earned a 1.7 rating in L.A. on Monday, its best mark ever in the market. The three top local markets were Buffalo (3.9), Denver (2.2) and Pittsburgh.
via SportsBusiness Journal,
NBC has sold out its inventory and said that demand “has been strong throughout the playoffs.” The network claims it and the NHL both are “poised to make a profit again this year” from their TV agreement. Verizon Wireless, MasterCard, Gillette and the U.S. Marines will all advertise during NBC’s coverage of the Finals.
Versus’ sales results “are on par with last year.” However, several ad buyers said that hockey and the Cup Finals “had not been a focus for them this year, and though network sales are strong, they described cable sales as lackluster.

If two US based teams were involved, of course the ratings would be higher on Versus. Plus, Versus only penetrates about 60% of the LA market.

I think Nielson is crap.
I had 5 people over to watch the game..I am not Nielson home.
if Nielson polled me..and I said we had 6 viewers..that would mess up the percentage and make it seem higher than it should in the market…
I think in ALL sports these ratings are to low.

And what about the people who go to bars to watch? I think sports events might be harder to rate because so often it is a community experience, whether going out to watch the game or getting as many people as possible at the buddy’s house with the coolest tv or the best deck for grilling.
I agree to adding Canada, because although for most sports the majority of the viewership is in the US, hockey is different. Most of the commercials on CBC are for the same things as on US stations, anyway—cars, drugs, and cell phone service.

You know, ratings analysts scoff at the notion of including Canadian markets when analyzing Neilson ratings for hockey games, ever since Mark Cuban tossed out that “crazy” notion some months back. But when you think about it, no other major sports league in the United States has a fifth of its teams (and possibly more than that in the future) in a separate country.
It’s vexing when you see just how low that rating is for the VERSUS game.
