via Ansar Khan of Mlive,
The Detroit Red Wings have signed defenseman Derek Meech to a one-year contract worth $500,000.
Meech will compete for the No. 6 spot in training camp and the preseason, but if he doesn’t get it, he’ll likely be traded due to the team’s crowded roster.

I hope if he gets traded, it’s not for only $500K worth of assets. Meech is worth more than that on the always fun, he just took that amount for a year to try to prove that. Granted, it’s not a whole lot more, but he is a puck-mover with an underrated shot who can play forward in a pinch.
He’s not going to earn himself above a third pairing spot on any NHL team any time soon, but if he gets traded to a team that desperately needs him on their third pair, I think you could see closer to $1M worth of value out of his play this season. More realistically though, it’s likely that his potential value would peak out around the $700-800K range.
That said, I am not at all saying that Meech is worth $1M or that he’s underpaid for his role on the Wings, just that if they trade him, I hope Holland gets a return closer to his potential value than his Red Wings value. I’d hope for at least a fourth-rounder.

Meech is worth more than that on the always fun “open market”,
Finishing sentences, it’s a good thing.

I would like to see him go to Chicago.

Can the Wings even get a better defenseman for the same price?

I’m kind of with you… the bottom line is they will stunt Kindl’s growth if they don’t give the kid regular minutes. So unless they’ve given up on Big Rig (which I highly doubt), they already have their top six set. This means they need a #7. Meech fits the bill perfectly because he’s played this role well before, can play forward, and he’s cheap so he’s easy to carry on the 23-man roster and you feel fine with him sitting in the press box.
I think the only problem is Meech doesn’t want to be #7 any more… and at some point you have to respect the man enough to trade him or waive him so he can get a chance to start fresh. No sense keeping him around as the #7 if he’s going to be a bitch about it.

Maybe Stevie Y comes calling for some depth in Tampa.

I hope, for his sake, that Meech gets traded or waived or something. He’s a capable player and a fresh start with regular minutes would help a lot. He could be good on the PP for a struggling team.

Remember the game in Calgary (2009?) when our top 4 were out? He was our best d-man and absolutely dominating in that game. I’m still hoping to see that Meech. I have a feeling if he got 15+ minutes a night on another team (who weren’t as deep as us), he would be a pretty good NHL’er.

I think at the price this is a good signing. #6 or 7 defenceman for sure - great move for *when* someone gets injured on the blue line.

Good contract. The kid deserves it, even if he gets traded. Definitely worth 500,000 for any injury riddled team because of his versatility.

so much for the talk of the wings lacking depth. I’m excited about the potential roster for this coming season.
