Mind Help For The Flames

from Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun,

It’s easy to think the word ‘confidence’ is the most over-used in pro sports.

Many will ask: How does an athlete with all the skills to reach the highest level, succeed there but suddenly stop believing they can do it?

It happens, and the Calgary Flames are turning to sports psychologist Dave Paskevich to help win the head games.

The Flames have hired Paskevich, whose speciality is applied sports psychology, to be their mental development coach.

He won’t be skating or shooting, but the University of Calgary professor may be a huge help in preventing those losing skids and scoring slumps.

Perhaps I’m a little behind the times, but doesn’t this fall under the responsibility of the team’s head coach and his assistants?

Possibly, but not every coach has a background in sports psychology. I just wish they would call the man their “team sports psychologist” instead of giving him the cheesy title of “mental development coach.” That sounds goofy.

having a “mental development coach” makes it sound like the team needs to wear their helmets off the ice as well.

Oh, this is just lovely. I can see it all now.

Paskevic: Look into my eyes, Jerome. You’re a good man. A powerful man. The puck can’t resist your powers. It wants  you to put it in the net. It loves it when you spank it’s little behind. Do it, Jerome. Spank it’s little behind.

Jerome: Say what?
