Modano Will Sign One Day Contract With Stars

Frisco, Tex. – Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk announced today that the NHL club will sign center Mike Modano to an official NHL contract, giving him the opportunity to officially retire as a Dallas Star. Modano will sign the contract at Friday’s press conference. Afterwards, he will send in his retirement paperwork to the National Hockey League. Full information on the press conference is listed below.

The amount listed on the contract will be $999,999 in honor of his No. 9.

“This is a special day for all of us,” said Nieuwendyk. “Mike Modano will always be the face of this franchise. He means so much to our organization and all of our fans. We wanted to give him the opportunity to retire as a Dallas Star. Mike has given his heart and soul to this game for over 30 years. On behalf of the entire organization and the National Hockey League, we would like to thank him for his dedication.”

Not bad for a day’s worth of work.

The $999,999 is probably how much he’d get paid for the whole season an they’ll prorate that for a day.

Does that count against their cap space, since he’s over 35?

But seriously, classy move by Nieuwendyk.

jwad, it probably does, but only the day’s worth (so probably $999,999 divided by the number of days in a season).

It’s a $12k payday, which the team will more than make up with merch sales for the special ceremonial day.

I thought the CBA said that if a player is signed after they turn 35, even if they retire, the team gets the cap hit for the entire contract.  It was one of the rules implemented to avoid players getting massive front loaded deals.  Apparently that only applies to players 35 and older who sign Multi-year deals.

Yeah… a class move by the organization that stripped him of his captaincy and then told him they have no more use for him.

Correct.  From CBA 50.2(c):

For each League Year, “Actual Club Salary” for each Club shall be
calculated as…

(iv) All Player Salary and Bonuses earned in a League Year by a Player
who is in the second or later year of a multi- year SPC which was
signed when the Player was age 35 or older…

Can’t say it much better than that.
