Morning Line

“There’s [anger]. You can’t forget about something like that because everybody in the organization and [the players], we expected him to come back. We thought he was comfortable here, and he was really good with [Sidney Crosby as his center], and stuff.

“The way he left was kind of, [a blow] to the heart, but you have to live with that. ... You have to respect his decision, but, for us, it’s not the best thing that could have happened.”

-Max Talbot of the Pittsburgh Penguins.  More player reaction from Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as the Penguins prepare to face Marian Hossa and the Red Wings tomorrow.

(Talbot) just doesn’t get why Hossa, who had joined the Penguins at the trade deadline and helped them come within two victories of a championship in June, decided to abandon them in favor of Detroit, the club that beat the Penguins in the Stanley Cup final.

Hmmmm. Maxime must not read the papers because Hossa explained very clearly why he chose the Wings over the Pens. The following is from July 3rd: “It was a really tough decision for me to make,’’ Hossa told the Canadian Press. “When I compared the two teams, I felt like I would have a little better of a chance to win the Cup in Detroit.”

You have to respect his decision, but, for us, it’s not the best thing that could have happened.

Right, Max. It wasn’t the best thing for you. It was the best thing for Hossa. And since he’d been a Pen for less than half a season, why wouldn’t he choose his own self-interest over yours?

(Crosby) “I think he knew everything there was to know. He took all that in and made his decision.”

That and the fact that he signed for one-year instead of the multi-year contract offered by the Pens must be what stings the most…even if guys like Sidney say they “understand” his decision. Marian played with them. Had success with them. “(K)new everything there was to know…” about them. And then still chose the Wings. Maybe Max is the only one who’s really being honest about how they really feel about Hossa.

Hossa was a trade deadline rental. Those don’t always stick around. he didnt choose to go to Pittsburg, he was traded there. he chose to come to Detroit.

Back in the day, I could not believe that Ottawa traded Hossa to Atlanta for Heatley.  He had been a “heart and soul guy” for the Senators.  A terrible move by them.

If I had been Hossa, I would have learned a tough lesson:
The NHL is a business, and you are the only one who is going to look after Marian Hossa.  Most clubs will only do what they think is best for them, not the player.

So Hossa made his decision to play for Detroit for a season.
He might leave the Wings in 2009.

That is the NHL business.  He must look after himself.

Good lord, he was a deadline rental.  You had him for 3 months.  Get over it.
