I wish every hockey fan could have at least one conversation about hockey with Scotty Bowman. I’m telling you, there is absolutely nothing like it. It’s like you are talking to the actual NHL itself - if it could be humanized - when you do. He’s done it all, he’s seen it all, and he remembers it all.

Meeting Scotty was one of the most awesome things that has happened to me. I met him in Phoenix at a shop I worked at.
Mickey,Ken,and Mark Howe had come in and the Mick asked if there was anywhere he could keep his food. I accommodated him. The three of us the hung out for quite a while because the team had a West Coast trip, and had based their selves in Scottsdale for a few days.
I asked Mickey if there was any way Scotty could sign a book for my son. Later on that morning Mickey and Ken said they had a surprise for me. It was Scotty Bowman himself.
I bought him a cup of coffee and asked if he would sign the book for Shawn. It was titled “Scotty Bowman a Life in Hockey” by Douglas Hunter. Bowman looked at the book and said, “This is unauthorized. You know, Dougie Hunter got the pants sued off him in Canada for writing about Timmy Horton.”
I was a little stunned, and told Scotty that I had no idea, and not to sign it if he didn’t want to. He grabbed the book, and with a big smile, signed it.
That was in 2000. I saw Scotty a couple more times during that stay, and even talked a little hockey. It will always be one of my greatest memories.

A little hyperbole there, Adrian? “Stanley Cup contender” this year? They still have to execute.
If you purport to know anything about Scott Bowman, it’s this: he’s the game’s greatest bench boss. Ever. But as an executive (and let it be known that he was a GM several times)? The man isn’t even the grain of his legend as a coach.
I admire Scott Bowman as he represents the NHL at it’s finest. If there is a real quality about the legend of Bowman, it’s this: he changes with the times and he stays with the times. To truly understand that paradox is to understand Bowman.

Blackhawks my new favorite for the Cup
“Blackhawks my new favorite for the #8 spot in the Western Conference playoffs.” Fixed.
Scotty still knows more about what’s going on in the game, in his little pinkie, than 95 percent of the rest of the current GMs in the league.
That means just one and a half GMs know as much as Scotty knows “in his little pinkie.” Anatomy issues aside, I’m guessing that the one whole GM in that equation is Kenny Holland, thanks in no small part to his association with Scotty.

I agree w/above.
Bowman is one of the best coaches of all time.
But consider what teams he coached WHEN he won cups and who his players were. Now Im sure people will write about ALL the teams he coached and all the bad players he had, but just look at the teams he had when he won cups…would they have won without him?? I mean, he almost could have stole one with St. Louis. (that would have been a helluva coach)

I agree with Adrian, there is nothing like meeting Scotty! I met him in 2005 when we both were coincidentally purchasing a car from the same dealer. He spoke about Ovechkin and how he felt Ovie would be one of the best players in a few years. It was a moment I will remember for the rest of my life!
