“Seeing the fans giving me the cheers when you’re stopping the easy long shot . . . it’s not a great feeling to get that from the home fans. At the same time, they paid their money and they have their rights . . .”
-Columbus goaltender Steve Mason after losing to the Wings last night. More on the game from Michael Arace at Puck-rakers.

Mason’s killing me because I have him in two fantasy leagues.
I’ll say this though—it’s not his fault the Wings hung 9 on the BJ’s last night. There were a couple soft goals, yes (especially the Abdelkader 5-hole one). But he wasn’t the one turning the puck over in the slot of his own zone and letting guys like Kronwall and Datsyuk fire away at him, and he wasn’t the defensemen that weren’t skating and kinda’ coasting around last night..
Columbus’ defense last night was exposed., just like it was in the 4-game sweep last spring. Columbus will never get ANYWHERE until they’re willing to pony up for about 2 first-pairing defensemen. You can’t ice a defensive corps that comprises of only 4th, 5th, and 6th defensemen and expect to not get your aft handed to you on occasion.
I learned this last night: Columbus won’t make the playoffs this year unless they truly improve their blueline somehow.
