Morris Signs With Bruins

via TSN,
The Boston Bruins have wasted no time restocking their blue line as they have signed defenceman Derek Morris to a one-year deal worth $3.3 million.
added 11:18am, from Joe Haggerty of Big Bad Blog at WEEI,
The $3.3 million price tag is a pretty high price for Morris and leaves the Bruins with roughly $1.3 million under the salary cap with Phil Kessel still sitting unsigned as a restricted free agent. The feeling at this address is that the Bruins tried to deal Kessel through much of June, but couldn’t a deal to their liking and aren’t going to deal the 36-goal sniper this summer.
Either he signs a one-year deal with the Bruins for less than $4 million — and the Bruins are forced to trade another valuable dressing room/grit commodity like Chuck Kobasew — or Kessel sits and watches the Black and Gold hockey world move forward without him.

Kessel may sit for the season ? That’s a descent asset ,not being utilized. They need to do something. I think he’s a goner, one way ar another.
Maybe he signs a 1-year deal for this season, but what about next season ? Same thing all over again? Maybe the Bruins have more space under the cap, but what if he has a subpar year ? The Bruins will then lowball him, remember this is the Sinden/Jacobs crowd. If he has a real big year after a 1-year deal, well then the fun really begins.

I think if he signs a one-year this year, he’s a UFA next year, so it wouldn’t be the same thing all over again.
What I wonder is, why doesn’t he file for arbitration? That way either bruins HAVE to sign him or they walk away from the contract and he’s a UFA…

Kessel has 4 years left of RFA status. If I’m not mistaken, players don’t get UFA status until 27 years old or 7 years in the league, or if a team doesn’t extend a qualifying offer. If he signs the one year qualifying offer, he gets arbitration rights next year, as he will have completed his fourth year. If Boston doesn’t trade him and he doesn’t get any offer sheets, I think he has something like 2 weeks after training camp starts to sign or he’s ineligible to play for the year. So, when you look at it, he’s really not holding the advantage here.

Can someone enlighten us as to why Kessel hasn’t received an offer sheet? I assume there’s an obvious reason or rule preventing it, but I’m not seeing it…

The Bruins are idiots. Why would they sign Morris for that kind of money over trying to keep Kessel? Kessel should be their main priority.

kessel hasnt recieved an offer sheet cause he would not be worth it. Any team would have to offer him 5 million or more to get him. On top of that, the compensation would not only too high, but with the salary cap going down by 6 million after next season, it would not be wise to overpay players while losing picks which are worth a whole lot more in the new nhl
