Moving Frolov Now May Not Make Fiscal Sense

from Spector at Fox Sports,

Sure, Frolov has value given his previous production and the fact that at 27 he’s now considered in his playing prime. That’s not why he’ll be tough to move in the autumn.

Frolov is being paid $4 million for this season, a number which most NHL teams would have trouble swallowing at this time of year. Not only does the return have to make sense for the Kings but the salary numbers have to fit for the club acquiring him.

If the Kings decide to put him on the trade block it’ll likely happen between January 1st and the NHL’s March 3rd trade deadline, excluding the two weeks in February when the league will shut down for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

The salary issue may or may not apply—it all depends on which potential destinations you are discussing.

For example:  Frolov’s salary is $4 million, however it should be noted his cap number is only $2.9 million.

From a cap perspective, there are quite a few teams who could fit him beneath the upper limit; the question is whether or not their internal budgets could handle his actual salary.

For a team such as Nashville, it would be a tricky issue - - the Preds do have an internal budget, but on the other hand Frolov is UFA at the end of the year so the commitment would consist of a pro-rated amount of his salary figure, and would last for the remainder of this season only.

On the flip side, other teams rumored to be in the mix, such as Chicago, Montreal or Toronto, most certainly could afford his salary under their respective budget structures.  The question for those teams is not the $4 million salary; rather it would be a question of being able to free up enough space beneath the upper limit of the salary cap to accommodate his $2.9 million cap number.
