Mowers On His Way To The Swiss League

via Ticker,

The Anaheim Ducks assigned center Mark Mowers to SC Bern of the Swiss National League prior to Friday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers.

Acquired from the Boston Bruins via trade in September, the 33-year-old scored one goal in 17 games with Anaheim this season.

Interesting. Didn’t know that was possible. Mowers bought a house in Boston for his family right before he was traded to Anaheim. Portland is not that far away from Boston. Switzerland certainly is.

Hm.  How will Anaheim’s power play cope without monstrous minutes going to Mowers?

(hint: well).

Im with you Itlan..how is it possible to ‘assign’ a player to the elite league of switzerland? Do some NHL teams have affiliations with overseas elite teams akin to their relationship with AHL teams?

The NHL started using the term “loaning” or “assigning” players to the Russian Superleague earlier this season, and with the IIHF transfer agreement in serious trouble as the Swedes want to back out, the NHL’s doing the same thing it did when it demanded that reporters call the lockout a “work stoppage” or “labour stoppage”—it’s using subtle tweaks in wording to attempt to change perceptions about players who bolt for Europe.

via the Ducks Blog,

Rather than going to American League affiliate Portland, Maine, Mowers requested and received permission to explore other options, and found one in Europe. The Ducks will retain Mowers’ NHL rights for the balance of this season, after which he stands to become an unrestricted free agent.

Ahh I see, thanks George and Paul. Haha, knowing the NHL, of course that makes sense!
