Mule Has A Lower-Body Injury

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Johan Franzen did not skate due to an unspecified lower-body injury sustained in Thursday’s game. Coach Mike Babcock wouldn’t reveal the injury, saying Franzen was sent for tests and is questionable for Saturday’s game against Washington.

“Franzen got bumped last night so we sent him over to get checked out,’’ Babcock said. “He wasn’t feeling as good this morning. We’ll see if he’s OK or not.’’

Defenseman Jonathan Ericsson practiced and is fine after taking a shot off the side of his left knee midway through the third period Thursday.

Johan Franzen out 4 months w/knee injury.

added 3:52pm, via the Detroit Red Wings,

Red Wings forward Johan Franzen has suffered a torn ACL in his left knee and expected to be out of the lineup a minimum of four months.

The injury occurred during Thursday’s 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks in which Franzen scored the eventual game-winning goal during the second period. He has two points in three games this season.

Fan-freaking-tastic.

Thanks for ruining my day and weekend, Paul.  I know, I know, don’t shoot the messenger, but dammit man this is the long weekend in Canada!

Now what do they do? I can’t see them not trying to pick someone up. Thats a lot of offense gone right there and a minimum of 4 months brings you to february. I thought that with the signings that were made we’d and helmer being on the team we’d make up most of those goals. Helm has been out and now frazen is out long term.

Now what do they do?

The Wings will call up Abdelkader to fill-in.  I don’t see the Wings trading or signing anybody at this point in the season.  Their would be too many salary cap issues when Franzen returns.

It is official, for the first time in many, many seasons the Wings will be in a dogfight for the Central Division lead.  And the Wings may not come out on top this time.

Well this will effectively end any chance Franzen had of playing for his national team at the Olympics, if there was any chance left at this point anyway.

So what happens? Do you pump Leino or Filppula up to Pav’s line? Or do you re-unite Pav and Z , and move Filppula’s entire line up the depth chart, moving Homer/Cleary and Bertuzzi down?

I know which I’d like to see, but Filppula has worked out ok on Pav’s wing in the past, and I’d bet Leino could handle it as well.

I move Filppula to Pav’s line.  When he’s back, Helm takes over as third line centerman.  I still think the Cleary-Zetterberg-Bertuzzi line is struggling with timing and through the fact that they barely played in the preseason.  They just need more time together to get their rhythym before they really start rocking.

Shanny?

For $550,000 a year, that could work.  But then we’d be like the Avalanche, signing old players trying to reclaim past glories.  Other than cheap, I wouldn’t bother signing everybody and make the team fight it out.

Grit built through perseverance and constant battle will go far in the post season.

That’s a tough call as the Filpulla-Williams-Leino line has been our best so far this year, IMHO.  I don’t want to break them up.

Reunite the Flying Circus (Zetterberg, Datsyuk, for non-A2Y readers), and have Helm center a line with Cleary and Bertuzzi.  Helm and Cleary worked well together last post-season.

Zetterberg - Datsyuk - Holmstrom/Cleary
Leino - Filpulla - Williams
Cleary - Helm - Bertuzzi/Abdelkader/Eaves
4th line is Draper with two of:  Abdelkader, Eaves, Maltby, Holmstrom, May

I’ll agree with both of VooX’s posts.  Don’t panic-sign anyone--wait and see how things look a month down the road.  And the lines he gave are the exact same starting point I would have chosen.  Go with that on Saturday and see what happens.  Filppula’s ready for second-line duty--are Williams and Leino?  If not, put switch one of them out for Cleary.

Leino has showed himself capable last year.  Williams is more questionable as a second liner.

Yeah, I really think the Wings have enough talent in-house to make it through the regular season without having to bring somebody in.  We’ll know by the trade deadline whether we have to make any deals to get ready for the playoffs.

I asked you in the past to do so and you refused.

Until you do that, your posts may sneak through, but they will be deleted right after that.

Poor Franzen.  He’s got to be terribly disappointed to miss the Olympics as well as so much of the season.  I guess the only positive is that he got hurt early enough in the season that he will have time after he returns in February or so to get himself into playoff shape.

And it means more time for Abdelkader.  smile

Well that effectively ends that.

No, they can’t replace Franzen.  It has nothing to do with panicking, just with reality.  And I have to say, this already proves his long-term resigning was a big mistake for the Wings.  He’ll never stay healthy enough to truly matter to the club and be truly effective.

A freak injury means this was a mistake eh? Oh ok...how about Holland sign Hossa to a 10 year deal, only with him to miss 3 months because of a shoulder injury. Oh wait, Tallon did that. Watch Hossa blow his ACL next season or something similar.

These things happen.
