My Heart Sank A Bit Today

I know nothing can be done about it, the current CBA basically forced this option, but the words, “Shanahan on Waivers” and “Shanahan Clears Waivers” got to me.

A player with Shanahan’s credentials should not be associated with the word ‘waiver’, ever!

Hopefully things workout for Brendan and he, and he alone, makes the final decision on his next move.

I agree, it was surreal to read those lines especially for a HOF’er like Shanny.  He’s a great player and deserves better.

Hear hear, Paul.  He is right up there with Stevie in my book.  Sad to see him not get claimed by anyone.

To be fair, Shanny needs to know when it’s time to hang them up, and I think last season he would have seen the writing on the wall… it’s a young man’s game once again, and he’s not a young man…

Amen Paul. This is one more ill effect of the current CBA. And we’d better hope the next CBA brings about some sort of ability to trade portions of a contract (cap space) or restructure contracts, otherwise there will be an entire generation of players that fade out this way (DiPeitro, Zetterberg, Franzen, Hossa… just the tip of the iceberg).

Well, this happened to Mogilny in NJ several years ago…

Couldn’t agree more, Paul. Shanny is one of the greats and it’s sad to see him disrespected like this. I blame the cba and, by extension, Gary Bettman.

No one has disrespected Shanahan, he is no longer productive as an NHL player, yet sadly doesn’t know it yet. That is the only unfortunate issue here, his lack of acknowledgment of his level of skill at this point in his life.  To keep playing hockey everyone has to lower expectations as they get older. It is no different for him only the level of adjustment, it is time to retire!

It’s the Gary Roberts rule.  Seriously...when it’s your time to go you know.
