The Blue Jackets have signed captain Rick Nash to an eight-year, $62.4 million contract extension, The Dispatch has learned. That’s an annual cap hit of $7.8 million.
The deal will keep Nash under contract with the Blue Jackets through the 2017-18 season.

COLUMBUS, OHIO — The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed team captain Rick Nash to an eight-year contract extension that begins in 2010-11 and continues through the 2017-18 National Hockey League season, club General Manager Scott Howson announced tonight. As is club policy, terms were not disclosed.
“Rick is a Blue Jacket. He is our captain, the foundation of our team and one of the elite players in the National Hockey League and we are very happy that he will continue to call Columbus home for many years to come,” said Howson. “This is an important and exciting day for our franchise and our fans.”

He’s the franchise. Plus, I bet he would have gotten more on the open market. Nice move by the Jackets for getting him signed.

He’s their captain and face of the team, and I think he counts for an insanely high percentage of their offense. They need to get him some serviceable help - which might come from their rookies, I think one of their rookies was playing very well with him last year until he got injured - and he is only 25, so even when this deal ends he will be just 33 years old.
I think he’s worth it. Good for both parties to get it done so quickly and avoid an endless soap opera all next year.
(Wonder if Brian Burke was expecting him to be free to move after next year? I know some of the Toronto fans were hoping for it.)

Wow, that was fast after the disgruntled talk a day or two ago. I think that’s only a slight raise from his last contract, and not a bad signing really. A bit steep for the moment and near future perhaps, but last season it would have been about right. BJ’s have lots of cap to work with anyway.
But damn, I wanted him in Detroit.

This is a good move by the BJs, they have a great player locked up for his prime years. If they can get a couple decent pieces around him they’ll be a major factor in the Central for the next half-decade.

Good for Nasher and the Jackets. One less player for the Toronto media to drool over and claim “should” be playing there just because he grew up nearby.

Great move. Nash is an elite franchise player. He put up those kinda numbers with a mediocore supporting cast. Imagine how he would be if he had a crosby, or thornton, or malkin dishing him passes. Im sure he could reach 60 goals easily.

Yeah...Nash isn’t worth that much. Maybe 4 or 5...at this point...but not 7ish. Good luck to them with this one. He strikes me as Heatley-esque in the whining department.

Yowch! Is Nash really worth that much?
I’m a bit surprised you’d even ask that, Dave. Of course he is.
Without Nash, it literally would have been the end o fthe NHL in Columbus. If CBS can’t pay Nash that much money, who COULD they? More than just their franchise player, he really is the face of the NHL in Columbus, and he’s honestly has developed his game a long way form where it once was.
He’s their best player, their captain, their fan favorite, and still their future.
