Nashville May Have To Make A Decision On Suter Before The Trade Deadline

from of Tim Panaccio CSNPhilly,

Ryan Suter’s situation of potentially being dealt at the NHL trade deadline next month took an interesting turn on Friday when the Nashville Predators defenseman said he does not want to re-sign before the deadline.

He is unrestricted while fellow coveted teammate Shea Weber is restricted. One of them could be dealt.

The Flyers are among a handful of clubs interested in getting into the mix if that happens.

“I feel it would be more of a distraction than anything,” Suter said of signing in February. “We’ve never had a timeline or deadline. We’re just focusing on winning. Everything else will take care of itself.

“I don’t see it being a benefit by hurrying up and trying to get something done. I’m a Nashville Predator until July. I will focus on making my team better.”

, from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

Poile has told Suter and Weber that the old days of Nashville playing on small payrolls are over.

“That’s the conversation we’ve been having,” Poile told ESPN.com via phone Friday, a few hours before Suter broke his news. “Those days are past. We have new ownership in place. They’ve made a commitment to me and the players and both Ryan and Shea know that, because of the dollars they’re going to be getting and what we need to do to win that Cup, we’ll be spending what is necessary to contend.”

Right now, the Preds are a bottom-five payroll. But if Suter and Weber sign on the dotted line over the next few months, that will obviously change.

“I know we’re one of the lowest payrolls this year, but going forward that will no longer be the case,” stressed Poile.

more and Shea Weber chimes in too…

I was cracking up at Poile saying they will spend money….  I will believe it when I see it….

There was a comment by Sportsnerd saying the Preds churn out prospects like no other….  Guy must be smoking some of Tennessees cash crop.  If that was the case, they would have won something by now besides celebrating a 2nd round loss. .  Preds are good at drafting defensemen granted, but not much else.  Rinne is the first goalie they’ve drafted that amounted to anything.  Vokoun was in the expansion draft for those who think Poile drafted him.

Doesn’t it make sense that IF they gave him an offer like he (suter) wanted, which was rumored to be in the 7 to 7.5 range, he would be accepting it.  Poile always talks in circles.

I would hope he is available at some point for Detroit to get a shot at him.  This is the defenseman that fits with the Red Wings scheme of things.  Smart, hockey sense, plays well both end of the ice, kills penalties, plays power play, does not take stupid penalties.

What more can we ask for?  And his career will not show as well with any other team.

Well, here’s hoping that they try to make a go of it this season and not trade Suter, because if they trade him before the deadline there is exactly 0.0% chance that Nashville would trade him to Detroit, and if he gets a taste of a decent team during the last quarter of the season and that team does anything in the playoffs it would make it that much harder for Detroit (or anyone else for that matter) to make a play for him.

I know there aren’t many fans of Nashville out there (in here), but it is a pretty good thing if they actually have some money.  They are the model expansion franchise.  Their style has even become more exciting (from rigor mortis to freshly dead).  No seriously, I like them some (Erat, Rinne, Smith, Trotz).  This is the team that turned Sergei Kostitsyn into a dangerous 2-way player.  Seriously, I you saw him in MTL this is a profound thing.
I have to think Weber and Suter like playing together, but the fact that all the best teams in the league are salivating for their signature might just possibly be on their mind.
