Nearly Midnight:  Heatley Update

From TSN:

With just mere minutes remaining before the Ottawa Senators are on the hook for a $4 million signing bonus, it looks as though Dany Heatley is no more inclined to waive his no-movement clause to facilitate a trade to the Edmonton Oilers than he was 24 hours ago.

Sources close to Heatley say he doesn’t intend to make a decision by 11:59 p.m. eastern tonight and that he’s not comfortable making a decision on the Senators’ timetable.

But until the ‘’deadline’’ actually passes, nothing is carved in stone just yet.

Update 12:03am ET: Dan Tencer of 630 CHED had this to say on his Twitter tonight, referencing a source --

Source: Meeting went OK with the Oilers. It’s more about Heatley trying put the screws to Ottawa.

Update 12:50am ET: From Darren Dreger at TSN, a summary of today’s events.

Part of the problem can be traced back to the NHL entry draft last weekend in Montreal.  Heatley was led to believe both the San Jose Sharks and New York Rangers were both strong trading partners. Some suggested, the Los Angeles Kings showed interest as well.

Heatley was preparing for the trade.

Guessing the Heatley camp things with the 4 mil bonus paid out already there will be more takers.  There might be, but the Sens have no obligation to move him once they pay it.  Maybe the Sens then feel like they want their 4 mil worth before they move him.

Can’t imagine him reporting to training camp with the Sens in the fall…

YES!

Interesting to see where this leads over the summer - ‘cause the cap hit is 7.5 no matter how much you actually have to pay the guy…

I think I can say, without Hyperbole, that Heatley is worse than Hitler.

...maybe even Yashin.

well if u think about it, it is kinda like karma.  Hossa was pressured into a deal to sign with the sens, and they traded him immediately for Heatley.

I would usually rush to call Heatley a douche (I think the statue of limitations on killing his teammate has expired long enough to do so), but…

If YOU could make Four Million Dollars by sitting on your ass for 24 hours, wouldn’t you?

My wish: Ottawa doesn’t trade him and makes his ass show up to training camp in the fall.  Early.

Oh, the drama.

hippy dave, I highly doubt it would affect heatley.  He would have made the 4 million REGARDLESS.  Its just now, Ottawa has to pay it instead of whatever team they were going to trade him to.

Heatly is a good player. He probably consulted with Comrie and Pronger’s wife before making a decission. As an Oiler Fan this sh!t is not even disheartening anymore cause we realized we are not Detroit or Chicago. Anyone who comes here ask out after a season. Wished that we never traded Smyth cause he was one of those few guys that didnt mind the city. Cant wait for Habbybulin to ask out next year.

Really? Smyth?  Ya he was a heart and soul player, and definitely the soul of the oilers during his tenure there.  But, considering his injuries and decline since joining Colorado, would u really want his massive contract now?

yeah, i will take smyth any given day, and I would certainly take him over Penner.

Heatley just sounds like he’s a 12 year old. his parents write letters to papers for him, he is demanding warm weather destinations, he kills a teammate in a car that most 12 year old morons hang on their wall in poster form.

im sorry, but after the games hes played for 2 days and then hes trying to “stick it to ottawa” just reeks of him being a complete child.

maybe Snyder’s parents should have “STUCK IT” to Heatley a few years ago and put him up on charges for being an irresponsible, under-socialized rink rat head case.

this dude has a major sense of entitlement that needs to be “put in check”.

and why hasnt any sources come out with the full story on why the false deadline was blown? thats AMATEUR league business practices.

Smyth is one of my favorite players in the league.  Heart and soul guy.  Plays 100% a night when he can.  I would be honored to see him on our team.  At about $3M a year.  Out of all the Oilers players, remembering the sweep in the first round (you bastards), I respected him the most.

ya noone is complaining if its 3 million a year.  But at 6.5 considering his goal production and injuries is a lot of cap space to take.  He brings a lot of intangible to a team, but like i said, 6.5 is a LOT

I think things will change in Edmonton with the new ownership, though.  It was the old ownership group that gave the team such a reputation for cheapness and nepotism.  It will take a couple of years, but depending on how Katz runs the team, the reputation will change for the better.  It just takes time.

I think that trading the players rumoured to be involved going to Ottawa (Penner, Smid, Cogliano) would hurt the Oilers more than help them.  It would be nice to have a talented scorer like Heatley, but it would be better not to spend the cap space and several roster players to get it.  See what their own youngsters can do intead of being so quick to dump someone because he isn’t living up to expectations immediately.  Penner could be a better player under a new coach, as he never seemed to get out of the doghouse long with the previous coach.  Smid and Cogliano are still young, and they might be mediocre or they might be very good - it’s too early to tell.

Heatley is a douche for using Edmonton to try to drive up the price, and I hope he gets stuck with a place he doesn’t care for after all his machinations - but I’d rather not see him in Edmonton because I think the Oilers would be better off without him.  Develop the players they have and see what they can do.

In my opinion the only good thing out of the oilers trade is Cogliano.  He has some upside, but nothing phenomenal. As for Penner, you can’t even give him away and is being used as a salary dump.  Penner is utter garbage, noone wants him.  I think most of us can say that Smid has not projected out to be the player everyone thought he would be when he first came to Etown.  However, he is still young, and may pan out to be a top 4 dman.

Whatever u say, ottawa gets fleeced big time in this deal.  Then again, im sure that ownership didn’t want to give a 4 million dollar bonus to a player who doesnt want to play for them.  Which is why the asking price was so low.

what i don’t get is , why did they ask for so little from edmonton, when from other teams like LA they were asking for so much.  How do u figure that J.Johnson, Dustin Brown and I forget who, is even comparable to the weak edmonton offer.  What they were asking from LA was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than they asked for edmonton.

Baroque, things may change in Edmonton with Katz as the owner, but he has a huge man-crush on Kevin Lowe and that’s where the problem lies, in my opinion.

Yes, I realize that Tambellini is now the GM, but I have to believe that all personnel decisions still are approved by Lowe, and Tambellini has a huge chore cleaning up the Lowe’s mess.  Shawn Horcoff is making $7 million this year.  Shawn freakin’ Horcoff.  Lubomir Visnovsky is also making $7 million this year.  Not to mention the Penner offer sheet fiasco and there are problems-a-plenty in Edmonton.
