Never In The NHL World

I am so thankful we don’t see trades like this in the NHL….

from Chad Ford and Marc Stein of ESPN,

The deal, according to sources, calls for the Mavericks to acquire Marion and Kris Humphries from Toronto and Greg Buckner from Memphis, with Marion to receive a five-year contract worth an estimated $39 million. Buckner has had two previous stints with the Mavericks but is likely to be released, sources said.

The Grizzlies will land Jerry Stackhouse from Dallas and a substantial cash payment to buy out Stackhouse’s contract. Only $2 million of Stackhouse’s $7.25 million salary next season is guaranteed, as long as he is waived by Aug. 10.

The Raptors will receive Devean George and Antoine Wright from the Mavericks, while also preserving their $5.9 million mid-level exception for the coming season by turning their acquisition of Turkoglu—who is getting a five-year deal worth an estimated $53 million—into a sign-and-trade as opposed to an outright signing.

We’d all have to be fluent in capology.

It is only going to get worse in the NBA. I heard this morning they are looking at the cap dropping by like 15 million for 2010.

Sounds like ENRON’s accounting.

Though that sounds over the top, I wouldn’t mind having trades where money can be moved as well - not actual cap space but dollars outside the cap - I guess owner to owner.  I know it would open a big can of wtf, but if there were rules in place that regulated the movement of the money it might work and allow for more trades during the season - allowing teams the opportunity to fix things now rather than waiting, as there are instances where trades are not made - not because of the cap - but because of actual dollars being handed out (Heatley is a good example).  I dunno, might be too difficult to manage…

It’s more complex, but I’d prefer that system in the NHL. It’s much more fair, and doesn’t punish teams that can spend and develop their own talent, thanks to things like the “Bird Rule” and mid-level exception.

Trades like that are just no fun.  Yeah, a bunch of guys got moved around… but after reading it twice I’d be hard-pressed to tell you who went where and why.  It’s just a bunch of gibberish, and highlights the fact that the players are overpaid mercenaries in a business ruled by lawyers.

I’ll take the NHL system any day.  There should be no easy solution for bad cap management.

And keep in mind the NBA doesn’t even have a hard cap to deal with, just a “soft” one… and yet they still trade contracts (they haven’t traded player sin eons, just contracts).

the NHL cap is much harder.

There is no luxury tax or re-sign exception (NBA), no franchise tag (NFL), no Beckham rule (MLS)...

So we have to go and sign whale-like contracts to diminish the player’s cap hit, a large risk in a sport like hockey…
