New Asst. In Chicago Plus Report-Signing Of Toews

Torchetti replaced Ted Nolan, who moved on to coach the New York Islanders to a playoff birth this past season. “If this wasn’t such a great opportunity I would have been happy to stay in Moncton and continue to work with Mr. Irving to bring another championship to this great community,” he said. “Chicago recently signed Jonathan Toews, who at only 19, had an unbelievable tournament at the World Championships, and they have first pick in the upcoming draft, so it is similar to the rebuilding that I was part of in Tampa a few years ago.”

Jonathan Toews is home in Winnipeg. He’s still thrilled about his experience at the World Championship. He’s trying to get some rest, get over a cold and then get to work on a decision he’s said is going to be one of the toughest he’s had to make.
He has not, however, made that decision. Hockeybuzz.com falsely reported today that he has signed, citing sources in Canada saying that it was a “done deal.”
I got off the phone with Toews a little bit ago and he was surprised to hear about the report. After seeing it for himself he said, “Jeez, I can confirm that’s not true.”

On a day when the Blackhawks announced the signing of a new assistant coach and one of their prospects, two key questions remain unanswered—but perhaps not for much longer—regarding Jonathan Toews and Michal Handzus.
Of perhaps the most significance, Hawks general manager Dale Tallon said Tuesday he hopes to sign Toews, the highly touted first-round pick from last summer, perhaps this week.
