from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe,
As of Friday morning, the top six teams in the league were: 1. Pittsburgh (coached by Dan Bylsma), 2. Colorado (Joe Sacco), 3. New York Rangers (John Tortorella), 4. Edmonton (Pat Quinn), 5. Calgary (Brent Sutter), and 6. Phoenix (Dave Tippett). Not one of those coaches started last season behind the bench of that team. Supply your own interpretation. Change is a good thing? Anyone can run an NHL bench? It’s more about the players than the coach? Early-season statistical oddity?

Seriously - I think it has more to do with the players. Phoenix has been accumulating good players for a while now and Wayne was a lousy coach who should have been fired a while back, as one example. It would be nice if it was just that simple.

Buffalo, the team with the longest-tenured coach in the NHL, is in 8th with two or three games in hand on each of the top 6 teams. That would seem to indicate that it is more about the players - Ryan Miller has yet to lose in regulation, so his stellar play has had a lot to do with Buffalo’s success. If firing the coach is a signal that the organization is serious about winning, though, it might be related to other measures team might take off the ice to help make them competitive, too.
