New Coaches - New Challenges

from Red Fisher of the Montreal Gazette,

(Jacques) Lemaire, however, is not likely to find the magic again in New Jersey. The Devils led their division last season before losing in the first round to Carolina, but John Madden and Brian Gionta were lost during the offseason and no replacements of note were added.

You don’t make progress by standing still, leaving Lemaire with a high mountain to climb if the team he inherits is to repeat as division leaders.

My choice as the coach to do the best job is (Brent) Sutter.

The Flames lost Mike Cammalleri to the Canadiens. They will miss Cammalleri’s 39 goals, but the blow will be softened considerably by what Ollie Jokinen, who was acquired at the trading deadline last season, brings to the table.

Red Fisher is so far off he should retire. Devils will be better. Gionta is a nonfactor. Brian Rolston was injured for several games last year if he is healthy he may go back to his 30 goal performance he had with the Wild and his former coach there Jacques Lemaire. With Lemaire’s system the Devils won’t need to score a ton of goals. Lemaire is a better coach than Sutter. Calgary losing Cammaller will hurt a team that had a hard time scoring last season. Ollie Jokinen is the most overrated player in the league. He was sent packing from Phoenix because he wasn’t what was advertised. If Calgary doesn’t trade one of their defensemen for a scoring forward they willl have a very tough season.

People have been writing the obituary for the Devils consistently every year and every year they keep finding a way.

They’ll be dreadful to watch and not exciting but they’ll win.
