NHL Awards Gala—Watch Live

It’s being broadcast live online at CBC Sports. This link should open the player in your browser.

It seems to work in both the United States and Canada, though Americans will probably prefer the television broadcast on Versus (*in Canada, there is a tape delay for TV coverage.)

A few updates and the list of winners—with links to stories on their wins—can all be found below:

Update 7:17pm ET: Slap Shot at the NYT is doing a liveblog of the evening. Or join the folks here on A2Y for an active running discussion as things unfold.

Update 7:58pm ET: A couple thoughts thus far—Boudreau’s acceptance speech was great; Datsyuk has a certain… charm, doesn’t he?; and Ron McLean getting the phone call with the “The Hockey Song”  ring tone was pretty funny. (*the NYT disagrees and suggests the CBC are “sore losers”. Bah.)

Update 8:52pm ET: In the final analysis:  I’d say the award ceremony was solid; one of the better ones that I can remember really. It didn’t drag at all and the presentation itself was well done.

Furthermore, the addition of the “Lifetime Achievement Award” was a highlight for me—why didn’t the NHL think of this sooner? A great idea, and as its first recipient, Gordie Howe was—as always—awe-inspiring.

Nominees online here.

Award Winners:

Alex Ovechkin—Lester B. Pearson
Pavel Datsyuk—Frank Selke (which kills this SI.com theory, incidentally)
Vincent Lecavalier—King Clancy
Jason Blake—Masterton
Pavel Datsyuk—Lady Byng
Bruce Boudreau—Jack Adams
Patrick Kane—Calder
Gordie Howe—NHL Lifetime Achievement Award
Niklas Lidstrom—Norris
Martin Brodeur—Vezina
Alex Ovechkin—Hart (SHOCKING!!!)  smile

this from TSN:
“The Red Wings blueliner, who has now captured this award in six of the last seven seasons (Scott Niedermayer, 2004) dominated the voting this year. He received 127 of 134 first-place votes compared to only three first-place votes for Boston’s Zdeno Chara and two for Dion Phaneuf of Calgary.”

whoa.
