NHL Awards Gala Tonight

imageFrom CBC:

The best performers in the NHL this past season will be honoured at the league’s annual awards show Thursday night in Toronto, with host Ron MacLean also announcing the 2009 location for the ninth annual presentation of Hockey Day in Canada.

The show will feature a performance by Canadian folk legend and hockey lover Stompin’ Tom Connors, and presenters will include Hockey Hall of Fame members Mike Bossy, Bob Gainey, Billy Smith and Red Kelly.

The event will be broadcast by CBC and Versus.  There may be a live feed available online of the red carpet interviews, in which case that will be posted on KK.  Also, Bill and the 19 will be liveblogging their way through the evening, and I’ll be adding updates here on the main hockey page of KK.

Out of curiosity, how popular is the NHL’s big award show with hockey fans?

Ron MacLean’s job as a host is nothing less than pure PUNishment.  Other than MacLean’s incessant and plain old awful attempts at being funny, they’ve done a much better job of booking good bands and especially letting the awards and players be the stars instead of the kitsch.

One of the bloggers at SI thinks that the NHL already leaked the award winners:

Thanks for the link, bcrt2000. Fannation argues that the order of the photos at the NHL’s Award page suggests who the winner is.  I’m not sure that’s really a fair assumption - it could just be random. (But I’ve taken a screenshot of the page so we can compare it later!) smile

P.S. A note from Steve reminds me of something I should have mentioned in the post above: CBC television will be broadcasting the show on a delay—presumably because they want to cover their time-zones and snag the largest audience size they can (*not because, as Steve suggested to me, they’re worried about Ron McLean dropping an F-bomb!).  But at least CBC.ca will be showing everything live online.

Versus in the United States will be broadcasting the event live on television. Which is the better way to go, if you ask me.

They must have gotten everything synced up, it’s fine now! I thought Coronation St. was a skit to open the show at first, I kept waiting for the joke, lol.

It wasn’t just you, Sunny. I got bombarded by messages from others freaking out. smile

I’ve posted the link to the live broadcast on CBC if anyone needs it.
