NHL Brings In The Experienced On-Ice Officials For Pens/Bruins Game

via Fluto Shinzawa of the Bruins Blog at the Boston Globe,

Bill McCreary and Stephen Walkom will be the referees for tomorrow’s Bruins-Penguins rematch. Brian Murphy and Tony Sericolo will be the linesmen.

Entering 2009-10, McCreary had been a referee for 1,597 games, second-most on the active list behind Kerry Fraser (1,828). Walkom was the NHL’s director of officiating for four seasons before returning to the ice this year.

Before this season, Murphy had 1,207 NHL games on his resume, sixth-most among active linesmen. Sericolo had worked in 664 games entering this year.

With these assignments, the NHL is sending a message that players will be under close watch tomorrow.

Every game I’ve seen Walkom officiate since his return has been a mess - inconsistent, and a lot has been let go, particularly obstruction.  So I’m not sure he helps.  The bigger point is of course that the NHL has declared open season for shots to the head, so the refs are constrained in what they can call.  If there’s a similar type of play and the refs call something, it just makes the NHL look like an even bigger joke, particularly if Campbell uses the penalty as justification for a suspension.

This wouldn’t have been necessary if they had made the correct decision in the first place.

Sucks for the B’s.  Every move they make will be scrutinized.  I anticipate alot of borderline calls going the Pen’s way.  But that’s business as usual.

If they don’t want the game to get out of hand, Campbell and/or Bettman should probably be in the building. Think Bettman was at the next Flyers/Sens game after that all-out brawl a few years back.

Then again, as Graf said, there was already a much simpler way to defuse this.

And also sending the message that anywhere in the league, the first time something happens the average inept referee will miss it.

  Amen to that!

Absolutely this could have been dealt with already.  It will be interesting to see how the NHL handles the next head shot - if the rules are not changed by then…

I anticipate that the ignorance of Red Wings fans will run a perpetual motion machine one day.

And they wonder why people think they’re the whiniest bunch in hockey (fans)...bordering on Bruce Boudreau territory.

Babcock looks so happy there doesn’t he???  I realized what i was doing putting that picture up, but in all honesty, it wasn’t to poke fun at wings fans, for all the competitiveness on the ice, and shots fired back and forth between fans on here, it was cool how they all worked so well together and came out with the Gold in the end.

No, you are!

You could bring back the late John McCauley for this game, but it won’t prevent somebody from doing something stupid. If the Bruins are intent on retribution, and I think they are, there is not much you can do but throw people out after the fact.

During the Probert /Domi rematch in MSG, the talk for days was the commish was going to be there as was the supervisor of officials. Didn’t matter, those two were going to battle.

If they had competent refs at the first game none of this would be necessary. Cooke would have gotten a 5 minute major and been suspended for 5 or 6 games. Plus the Bruins might have won with the 5 minute PP to end the game. As it is they have made themselves look stupid and screwed the Bruins as well. Now they will try to screw the Bruins again to save the NHL’s favorite team the Pens. The Pens are getting smoked pretty often these days so the NHL better do something…...
