from Rick Westhead of the Toronto Star,
A secret NHL report detailing the ticket revenues of its 30 teams reveals what Canadian hockey fans have long suspected and offers a compelling case for putting more teams north of the border.
The six Canadian teams account for 31 per cent of the $1.1 billion (U.S.) in league ticket revenue, and have gone through league-leading double-digit increases over last season, according to the internal NHL report.
Update 4:26pm ET: Rick Westhead talked about his article with Alex Seixeiro on Fan 590 earlier today.

What a stupid story. 31%? Whoo-de-doo? 6 teams out of 30 makes them 20% of the league anyways, and duh, we know Toronto, Montreal, etc, are hockey hotbeds.
How long ago was it that people were busting on Dallas? The Stars seem to be doing just fine there. Remember when California wasn’t a hockey market? Guess where a chunk of American prospects are starting to come out of?
There’s no doubt that sometimes it just doesn’t work out in cities (*coughMIAMIcough*), however last time I checked it also didn’t work out in Winnipeg or Quebec City either.
Such a masturbatory article…

I’d like to see what those numbers are taking montreal and toronto out as i thought they are on the high end of ticket prices for their seats.

I’m sure the currency difference has nothing to do with the slightly above average that the Canadian ticket sale percentage make up.

I’m not sure what the point of this is? Is it a “feel good” story for Canadians? Or that Canadian teams are good at ripping off their fans? Remember that all those teams play in one sport cities. They have no competition like in most US cities. Also remember that in total TV numbers there are more hockey fans in the USA. So move a team to Saskatoon but it won’t help the NHL at all.
