NHL May Get Involved In Nylander Deal

from Adam Proteau of the Hockey News,
NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told The Hockey News.com the league is awaiting further details before deciding whether to step in.
“Clubs and players both should have a right to rely on the sanctity of contractual commitments, regardless of how those commitments are memorialized,” Daly said in an emailed statement. “To our knowledge, there has been only one Standard Player’s Contract executed and filed with the League, and under our CBA, that contract should be enforceable.
“But if, after reviewing all of the relevant facts here, there has been a breach of a contractual commitment, we will certainly assist the Oilers in any way we can in seeking an appropriate remedy. We are not in a position to opine what those remedies might be at this point.”

Maybe Nylander should have just fired his previous agent and not hired a replacement, and done all the negotiating himself. It sounds almost as if the agent was negotiating with one team and Nylander was negotiating with another, whether or not that was the case.

What Nylander should have done is continue to negotiate with the Rangers instead of stopping 3 months ago. The Rangers would have easily signed him for what he got from the Caps IMO. They wouldn’t have needed to sign Gomez to replace Nylander, and would have only signed Drury to shore up their 2nd line centre position, and would still have more cap room than they have now and could possibly have made a run for a big time defenseman via ufa signing or trade.

Though I’m not sure they would have signed Drury and not Gomez, I agree with you bcrt. The Rangers probably would have given Nylander that money, though maybe not the 4th year.

Nylander speaks out. Apparently somewhere in there Nylander says he was negotiating with the Caps himself as he didn’t know how the Oilers negotiation was going. Oilers offered him more money but he wanted to be closer to Sweden and wanted to live in a warmer climate than Edmonton.

Thanks bcrt, very rough translation…
Nyland era participation on free the agent market ended with circus.
The sport blade spoke yesterday with Nylander.
” do not know”
He does not want to to confirm that he thanked yes to Oilers.
- the each discussions to and fro. I do not know really how all went to. Will speak with my agent about this, says Nylander, as kicked five sex agents during the career.
He recognizes however that he in all cases each huge near Oilers.
- yes, the each I. And their offer contained
clear more money than what Washington offered. But I change one ’ s mind of family reasons. I have wife and six children. The is a big stage to live four years in Canada and Edmonton. The is long and cold winters and quite long to Sweden. We get often visit from Sweden and sheep help with the children. Average Washington and Sweden can one take itself quite smooth, says Nylander.
Crisis meeting
Nyland era succeeded to come from Edmonton-förhandlingen.
Some as agitated Edmonton Oilers club management, as set in crisis meeting yesterday morning local time concerning Michael Nylander.
- I each forced to choose Washington. I hope that Edmonton can to understand the, says Michael Nylander.
Nyland era wants to now to see forward towards the the future hockey season.
And he hopes that the trouble with Edmonton will put himself.
There is that ‘sheep” word again!

Man, Nylander’s pretty much screwed because of this. His reputation takes a hit, and if the Caps have to compensate the Oilers, they’re not going to be very happy with him. It’s too bad, everything I heard about him as a Ranger was good: he’s a good teammate, works hard, stays on the ice after practice to work more, helps out the younger guys.
