from NHL.com,
NEW YORK – NBC Sports and the National Hockey League today announced that they have extended their partnership through the 2008-09 season with NBC exercising its option on the NHL. The joint announcement was made today by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Dick Ebersol, Chairman, NBC Universal Sports & Olympics.
“We’re thrilled to be able to continue our relationship with the NHL,” said Ebersol. “There have been positive signs for the league, both on and off the ice. Ratings were up this year; the Winter Classic in Buffalo was a huge success; advertising sales were healthy; and the product on the ice has never been better, led by young, marketable stars such as Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin. We believe this is a sport that will continue to grow.”
Bettman said, “This is great news for the NHL and its fans. NBC has been a great partner and its innovations to the broadcasts have helped bring fans inside the game like never before.”

12:30 isn’t always the best start time for the Eastern time zone, either.
I have a lot of things to get done on the weekends, and anything sceduled before about 2:00 pm isn’t going to get watched in my house because I’m busy.
Oh, well.

A story in the Wall Street Journal says that NBC will only air games 4, 5 and 7 of the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals. They have previously and will again this year air games 3-7. Who will show games 3 and 6 next year? Those games are not in Versus’ deal, so will the NHL use those games as leverage to get Versus to tak about letting ESPN is on some action?

Forget NBC. Wake me up when the HDNet schedule comes out. There’s a network with some variety in the lineup.

Rob I think the Wall Street Journal article report was wrong. The Press Release says NBC next year is airing up to 15 post season games. Which would be 4 in the first round, 4 in the second round, 2 the in 3rd round, and games 3-7 of the final. Which is the same as it is now.

Kukla’s Korner is always a free service for readers, but it costs some money to maintain. If you’re ever in a position to donate a few dollars to help out, we’d be very appreciative.

“NBC will air eight of its nine Sunday afternoon games at a consistent 12:30 p.m. ET start time.” - just a little East Coast bias there. I’d prefer a standard 3PM start time so west coast teams could be involved also.
