NHL Should Be Dark On Trade Deadline Day

from Victor Chi at the Sporting News,
When it comes to a trade deadline, no other sports league can match the fuss and frenzy of the NHL.
The NHL should be accentuating this distinction.
Turn the day itself into a stand-alone event. It should be easier now that the NHL Network is available in the United States. And if Versus is supposed to be such a great partner for the NHL, get the network to simulcast the NHL Network or a Canadian all-sports outlet or produce its own trade-day show.
On deadline day, games actually serve as a diversion. The attention and resources required to covering games come at the expense of deeper trade coverage.

I actually like this idea. In fact, I’d stay home from work just to take part in this kind of event. Oh, wait, I work from home and I already spend 99% of that day following the trade news.
But, hey, I would stay home if I wasn’t already here.

That is an interesting idea. It’s like a built in gimmick that they don’t even have to engineer. Just make room for the day to grow a little.
But, there are no games before the 3:00 p.m. deadline anyway, and the games are the perfect opportunity to talk about all the trades. I guess a day off would allow for one day where all the new guys debut with their new teams.

I don’t think there is a lack of coverage (in the markets that care) of the deadline day. Actually the amount of coverage is almost nauseating.

An excellent suggestion by Mr. Chi (nice to see he’s landed another hockey writing gig. I followed his work for years in the San Jose Mercury News).
And because it’s an excellent suggestion, the NHL won’t implement it.
