NEW YORK - National Hockey League Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly issued the following statement regarding the Phoenix Coyotes:
“We have just become aware of today’s Bankruptcy Court filing purportedly made on behalf of the Phoenix Coyotes. We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the petition, including the propriety of its filing. We have removed Jerry Moyes from all positions of authority to act for or on behalf of the Club. The League will appear and proceed before the Bankruptcy Court in the best interests of all of the Club’s constituencies, including its fans in Arizona and the League’s 29 other Member Clubs.”

i wonder if the other four teams in deep financial trouble is ready to declare Bankruptcy.
the Unraveling of NHL under Gary Bettman has begun people.
doesnt this remind you when all the major bank firms started to collapse?

I’m not surprised. He probably got sick and tired of losing money with no end in sight, and said in effect “screw this - I’m getting out.”

I find Daly’s statement: “We have just become aware of today’s Bankruptcy Court filing. . .” completely absurd, and unfathomable.
Either: (a) the NHL is completely clueless as to the goings on of it’s teams, or
(b) utterly incompetent in the supervision of it’s teams, (c) is lying through their collective teeth about this fact, or maybe (d) all of the above.
Thanks Gary, Ass.

Reading daly’s press release , all I could hear is the sound of the teachers voice from the Peanuts cartoon.
Just became aware??? Nice having your finger on the pulse JA.

i will say this, after the playoffs is over all teams and league office will layoff alot of people and when books are opened for the next cba, their will be stories popping up that the league is in the red…..

I wish the Coyotes fans the best of luck through this whole thing. You have built a state of the art arena, endured mismanagement and futility for over 10 years, and yet there are still 15,000 still willing to attend, when it seems everyone else hopes for your failure. There is some hope that they will try to protect the interests of the fans in Arizona, you deserve it. Good Luck!!!

someone please explain to me why Gary Bettman keeps getting the blame for every single issue that occurs. Is Gary supposed to be in every single owners pocket every single minute of every day? Who is to say that the coyotes ownership isnt indeed out to do whatever they want - without informing the league.
Bettman has to be completed blindsided by this, as just days ago he said that the franchise was staying put. http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=4019709
Why would he make these public statements, only to have this fly in his face. This is obviously not his doing. No one would knowingly bring this level of pain upon themselves.
Bettman is not in power of the league cause he asked for the job, the owners of the teams put him there, and gave him the powers. Blaming Bettman for everything that goes wrong in the league is beyond absurd.
If you don’t like bettman, then go talk to your teams owner and ask that owner to remove him…

wasn’t it him and owners the people who lockout their players twice? was him who got the league a crappy tv contract? wasnt him who gaved teams to cities that arent a hockey market a team? you can write a novel of his mistakes.
It’s his fault because it happen under his watch. but some of the blame does go towards some of the owners, espeically snider for vs tv contract.
if the board of governors have a pair, they start reexamining bettman’s job before those people who doing real job trying to get sponorships and ticket sales for each club loses their job.

Gary Bettman has been a good Commissioner. He has gotten payroll stability in the league, creating more parity than ever. The game is more exciting than it has EVER been due to his pressure to eliminate thug hockey. He has expanded the game the entire length of the nation which has resulted in major growth in youth and minor league hockey in places like California and Texas. He has returned NHL hockey to network television and created an NHL only cable channel, XM radio and given priority to Versus to show the game as it should be. Gary has done a very good job!

as indicated by Tero. if you look at the complete picture, I think bettman has also done a good job. It is not really his fault that the major US TV networks wont offer a better package. I would say it is obvious he took the best deal he could get.
The fact that he openly discusses issues on his radio program, and by all appearances does listen to what the fans have to say
If the league was doing bad, Gary would have been gone a long time ago..
the NHL, like most other leagues, just cannot survive in every market. Both the NBA and MLB have had to move franchises, but no one seem to take the heat like Gary does…

Well, this gets interesting now. It’s a fight. LOL! I have to hand it to Jerry Moyes. He wants this thing resolved NOW and I think he believes the NHL is moving too slowly for his tastes.

Anyone in this who thinks Jerry Moyes is a saintly owner is fooling themselves. Bettman isn’t a good commish, but Moyes is a terrible owner who’s been looking to get out of owning the Coyotes for about a year or two now to focus his finances and attention fully on his trucking business. This guy is just as bad as Jeff Loria in MLB, except that in this case, the commissioner isn’t his hit man to bail him out of trouble and only now are people hearing about what a prick he is.

Never said he was a saint in the first place, Joe. I’m sure Bettman thought he had a great guy running things in PHX but I agree that Moyes was over his head running a hockey operation and wanted out as fast as possible.
