from Chris Botta of NYI Point Blank,
Newsday is firing 5% of its staff during a downturn in the newspaper industry one expert called “the worst since the Depression....
According to Newsday, the travel budget is expected to be cut.
I understand there are far greater issues here, but I recommend that Newsday and the Islanders broker an appropriate travel arrangement that’s beneficial for the newspaper and maintains the coverage of the team. Just as the Islanders travel with their radio and TV broadcasters on the private team charter, beat writer Greg Logan and any other assigned Newsday writers should fly with the team to and from games. (Needless to say, the Post and Daily News should be welcomed, too).

Exactly Tapeleg. I was shocked Botta would even recommend something like this.

Anything to save a sportswriter’s job, I guess. I hate to see coverage shrink, but maybe the market is flooded as it is. If the government is considering letting auto manufacturers die on the vine, I’m supposed to care about a beat writer? That may sound cold, but in the grand scheme, I have better things to worry about.

Kukla’s Korner is always a free service for readers, but it costs some money to maintain. If you’re ever in a position to donate a few dollars to help out, we’d be very appreciative.

Just to save the medium?
Perhaps they haven’t heard the homers we have all over the league calling games on TV and the radio. The team subsidizing the newspaper would bring another medium under the control of the team.
