No Email Trail In Burke’s Days With The NHL

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,
Brian Burke figured if there had been e-mail when he was the lord of the NHL’s office of discipline, the current firestorm over Colin Campbell’s indelicate messages to staffers would look like a single sparkler on a windy day.
“I felt exactly like Colie felt,” Burke told ESPN.com on Wednesday. “There were divers and clowns in our league and I called them that.”
The only difference is Campbell provided such assessment in electronic mail that lived on long past the moment that spawned the comments which ultimately ended up as evidence in a wrongful dismissal suit and fodder for the media.
“If I’d used e-mail, I’d have used the same language,” said Burke, who was vice president and director of hockey operations for the NHL from 1993-98. “Only I didn’t get caught because there was no e-mail trail.”

So that excuses it? Not sure I understand what Burke is trying to say. What I take out of it is that Burke is admitting he’s a stubborn crony unfit for the position.

One more plus in the column that the NHL is run by an old boyu network and nothing has changed. Sad thing is Burke ( a trained lawyer) thinks “I was just as bad” is a defense.

Always felt burke was a blowhard J.A. and his statement to espn just reaffirms my opinionn of him.
Ya know , the fact that campbell called the guy a “dive artist/faker” doesn’t really bother me.
What really bothers me , is that campbell or burke or any number of J.A.‘s in charge of the NHL will say this kind of stuff off the record, but then smile and shake your hand.
All of them a bunch of J.A.‘s , and I would tell them that to there face if I ever run into them.

Why not give the responsibility to Gary? Selig dishes out punishment in MLB. Stern and Goodnow do it for their respective leagues. Sure, its one more thing that Gary could screw up, but Gary B isn’t cut from the hockey culture. There are no historical grudges. He doesn’t give a damn about any of the players. Well maybe Crosby, but thats because he’s a marketing moron.

Kukla’s Korner is always a free service for readers, but it costs some money to maintain. If you’re ever in a position to donate a few dollars to help out, we’d be very appreciative.

So it’s perfectly ok to have biased feelings towards certain players as league disciplinarian Brian?
This is just one more reason why I can’t stand Burke and all his cement-headed buddies.
