No To 84 Games

from Darren Dreger of TSN,
Less than two weeks ago the Detroit Red Wings were touting a proposal for an 84 game regular season schedule that put a 6 game cap on the preseason - instead of the free for all that exists now - and included a home and away with all out of conference teams….
According to sources, Bettman persuaded Detroit to stop the campaign to increase the number of games from 82 to 84, as it was for two seasons during the early 1990s.
Sources say Bettman was not pleased with the way the NHL schedule was so hotly and openly contested by league executives last season and intends to keep a lid on public debate this year.

How would an 84 game vs an 82 game schedule impact the NHLs “partners” and the CBA? Since season ticket holders are forced to buy the pre-season AHL matches for NHL prices wouldn’t this proposal make a little bit more sense? In reality we could all use a shorter season that started in Ocotober and had the playoffs end in May.

Sorry, maybe I let my general dislike of the schedule get the better of me. I’m not really saying I have to have the 84 game schedule, but from a Detroit fan’s perspective, the pre-lockout schedule barely scratches the surface of our gripes with scheduling. We’ve lost some of our best O6 rivals by the East-West alignment, then that was exacerbated by the current schedule. We get a little of that back, but not enough with the pre-lockout schedule. We also get screwed over by the NHL with the dearth of weekend games (and Friday night is not a weekend night—ask anyone who has a job that requires more than 40 hrs/wk). Montreal and Toronto get 17-18 Sat/Sun games. Much of the rest of the NHL have 15-16 at a minimum. The Wings have 9. They’re filling someone else’s arena most weekends, while Wing fans get to pay full price for all those pre-season games to boot, then 2x-5x the regular rate IF their team makes it to the playoffs.
Sorry… I ranted, but I am a disgruntled former season ticket holder. The pre-season games should only be half price, btw.

Just keep going, Gary. Keep doing whatever you want and expect fans in the core markets to keep bending over. I’m not naive enough to think it’s all Bettman as I know how divisive the scheduling issue is amongst the BOG. Bettman needs to lead once in a while and maybe remind everyone where the revenue for this league comes from—keep alienating your biggest, strongest and most dedicated fan bases, and maybe trends like the ones seen in Detroit, Colorado and Dallas will continue. I also doubt that the teams for whom these concessions are being made will make up the revenue being lost, and furthermore increase their’s over that amount. The more I read, the more I’m convinced the league has a bunch of jokers running wild (and they’re running the place)!
