Not A Good Way To Expose The Game

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

So, you’re the NHL. Your sport just had the most watched hockey game in three decades in the United States.

You follow up that golden Olympic Sunday on Feb. 28 with an opening fortnight in March that would make the world’s best PR person want to run for the hills.

To recap:

March 7: Pittsburgh’s Matt Cooke levels Boston star Marc Savard with a devastating hit, reigniting the talk of head shots, etc. The hit just happens to occur on the eve of the NHL’s GM meetings where head shots are the headlining topic.

THIS JUST IN: the game is “EXPOSED” and no one cares, moron.

quit talking like the US is going to have some radical paradigm shift in sports worship and latch on to the NHL any time soon based on positive “MARKETING”, “EXPOSURE”, “RATINGS” and “TV DEALS”

To the overheated concern troll who posted the first comment:

I don’t think anyone on this site believes that hockey is poised to regain the favor of the mass audience anytime soon. To the contrary, we see quite clearly that the sport has fallen way behind the Big Three of American sports, and that a comeback (to the extent a comeback is even possible) will require a lot of hard work and intelligent decision-making by the NHL.

And that’s why we care so much about the short-sighted, inconsistent management of hockey. That’s why we all do a facepalm when we see the NHL frittering away the good will it gained from the Olympics, shooting itself in the foot regarding the rules of the game, and wasting precious time and resources trying to save Gary Bettman’s ego from shriveling in the Arizona sun. Among other things.

No, we are not the mindless puck bunnies you accuse us of being. And if you spent more than five seconds actually reading the site, you’d realize that.

I agree with Death Metal Nightmare. The only people that are concerned about Cooke or OV’s hits are hockey people. Casual fans went back to their reality and sitcom shows after the Olympics. There was no bump from the Olympics and no one but the usual hockey fans are listening. Now back to your regularly scheduled programing…..

Look, Bo, this is a website of hockey news and commentary. It is aimed at hockey fans, and read by hockey fans. Your comment, and DMN’s, are irrelevant to the subject of the post.

And anyway, why the hell are you even visiting this site if you don’t care about hockey?

I don’t think Bo is stating anything other than possibly the hard truth here.  I don’t think he’s backhand slapping the NHL or the game of hockey—just making a frustrated observation.

And one that unfortunately is likely accurate.  ESPN stopped talking hockey when the Olympics ended.

Primis gets it.  jvwalt you are missing my point. I am not referring to this site. Paul stated headline, “Not A Good Way To Expose The Game” and LeBrun writes,“You follow up that golden Olympic Sunday” with the Cooke hit. My point is there is no exposure other than to those already following the game. The casual fans that watched the Olympics are gone. It is neither good nor bad PR because it is the same people watching hockey as before. Has nothing to do with this website. Maybe you need to read and think about what I wrote before you make dumb comments.
