Now That Was A Hockey Game

from Jason Kay of the Hockey News,
How entertaining was the contest? The worn-out beat reporters sitting on press row – men and women who after two months of travel typically pray for the final to end in a sweep, regardless of who wins – were standing in OT ...for good chunks of it anyway. It’s the first game I can recall attending in years where I felt nervous energy as a paid neutral observer.
“That was probably one of the best games for a long time,” said Penguins coach Michel Therrien. “And it’s fun.”
The question now is how does the NHL build off it; what can the league do to help sustain the momentum it has built?

You don’t need to tell people it was a good game…especially Hockey News readers. There are plenty of very good hockey games. They act like this was the only good game in the last 50 years. It’s insulting to anyone who knows the game. And people that don’t know it don’t care one way or the other.

I have problems with that. Officiating still a story.
I wonder if I am the only one who still has the opinion that a sporting event isn’t put on for the entertainment of the MSM and other press - it is supposed to be abotu the teams actually playing, not how well it matches up to some imaginary standard that the media have set for it. Many reporters are pretty full of themselves, but for once it would be nice if they realize it isn’t about them.
Probably nothing. If the playoffs next year wind up in a couple of markets that don’t draw in viewers, maybe Nashville and Florida, they will be right back to the same point they are now. If sports are to be fair, they can’t be scripted for maximum publicity - that’s called fixing.
