Now We Can Talk Kovalchuk

via TSN,

Ilya Kovalchuk’s days as a member of the Atlanta Thrashers appear to be numbered.

Thrashers general manager Don Waddell met with the star forward on Wednesday and told him to expect a trade to another NHL team over the next few hours or days.

added 3:44pm, via Dan Rosen of NHL.com,

The Kings, Bruins, Rangers, Flyers and Blackhawks are reportedly interested, but all the stories we’re seeing now do not include the Flyers and Blackhawks.

added 3:55pm, via a Tweet from Bob McKenzie,

Teams in mix for Kovalchuk include: Boston, New Jersey, Rangers, Philadelphia, Calgary, Chicago and L.A. Some more. Some less. Auction time.

added 4:06pm, via a Tweet from Craig Custance,

Kovy very much in play, but I’m being told that the Blackhawks aren’t in the mix right now.

added 4:47pm, via a Tweet from Kevin Allen,

Thrashers’ want list hasn’t changed for Kovalchuk deal: they need players who can help now. There are interested teams we don’t know about

added 4:53pm, Another Tweet from McKenzie,

About a half dozen teams still in the mix for Kovalchuk. Likely to take at least another two or three days to sort itself out. No deadline.

Looking forward to see how this plays out, but please stay in the same conference.

Boston, New Jersey, Rangers, Philadelphia

Unless the Hawks obscenely overpay; that would be cool too.

Given the recent comments from the Kings GM, seeing Jack Johnson involved in this would make a lot of sense.

Because Wayne Gretzky was never traded.

Phil Esposito was never traded.

Glen Hall was never traded.

Ted Lindsay was never traded.

Oh wait…

It seems to me it would be more the Thrashers’ “fault” for him needing to be traded. Management of a sports team.

my arrangement is based on that fact bettman and the owners thought the cba was a brilliant idea and it would prevent situations like this from happening and oops they got egg all over their faces

I still don’t buy the Hawks as being in this… considering what they’d have to give up, it wouldn’t make them a better team… if anything, it might make them worse because they’d almost certainly be giving up better defensive players.

And yet Wayne Gretzky was traded for financial reasons.

Pre-salary cap.

Well, Chicago won’t have to offer much to outbid most of the competition. Even though giving up good assets for a rental (I can’t see a realistic way for Chicago to sign Kovalchuk) isn’t always the best of ideas, it could be a method to reduce some of the cap problems facing in the offseaon. A chance to get a little extra punch to win the Stanley Cup is worth considering.

Can’t imagine Kovy goes anywhere but Chicago…...I mean Chicago could afford to give up Versteeg, Skille, one of their Dmen and a #1 pick. They need to dump salary for next year anyway. How is anyone going to top that….? I mean LA could give Frolov and Johnson…but does anybody really want Johnson? He stinks…..
