“Obscene Display Of Officiating”

Larry Brooks of the NY Post on the penalty call against Orr last night…

They overcame an obscene display of officiating from a four-man unit that had no control of the match at all, and simply invented a major penalty against Colton Orr midway through the second period when he caught Matt Cullen carrying the puck with his head down cutting from right to left in the offensive zone and sent him to the ice face-first in a collision that could not be avoided.

“It was scary,” Stillman said. “First I’m playing the puck, and then I see him laying there. I was just asking if he was OK. He was talking by the time I got there. Just, ‘Stay there, are you OK?’ and ‘No, I don’t feel good.’ “

Cullen, who was unavailable for comment after the game, suffered a broken nose and was being examined for a possible concussion.

“It’s hard to say,” Hurricanes coach Peter Laviolette said. “A mild one, maybe. I’m not sure.”

larry brooks is right. it was Obscene Display Of Officiating” if chris lee is the ref. he’s the worst ref in the league and he’s protype ref that bettman wants in this “new nhl”.

nhl wants to get rid of refs like kerry frasher who lets the players play and doesnt call a phantom call in the last minute of a game.

i have watching hockey for 20 years and i ever heard or watch a player get a pentaly called “5 minutes for interfernce”

It seems that they added the Rule 43 Attempt to Injure to the Interference call.

“A match penalty shall be imposed on any player who deliberately attempts or who deliberately injures an opponent...”

and
“No substitute shall be permitted to take the place of the penalized player until five (5) minutes of actual playing time have elapsed from the time the penalty was imposed.”

But while I think that hit was dirty, both of Orr’s arms are clearly up at head/neck height, it wasn’t interference. Elbowing, maybe, but interference? nope.

The refs really made a pooch screw out of this one.
