NEW YORK (November 1, 2007)—Detroit Red Wings left wing Henrik Zetterberg, Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Pascal Leclaire and Calgary Flames right wing Jarome Iginla have been named the NHL’s ‘Three Stars’ for October.
FIRST STAR—HENRIK ZETTERBERG, LW, DETROIT RED WINGS
Zetterberg tallied points in each of Detroit’s 13 games and led the League in scoring with 22 points (10 goals, 12 assists) as the Red Wings (10-2-1, 21 points) finished the month atop the League’s overall standings. He recorded seven multiple-point games, including three-point efforts against Chicago Oct. 6 and Los Angeles Oct. 14. With a point tonight at Calgary, Zetterberg would tie the Red Wings’ longest season-opening point streak (14), set by Norm Ullman in 1960-61. Zetterberg has recorded points in 19 consecutive regular-season games dating to 2006-07; he last was held scoreless Feb. 8, 2007 at St. Louis.
Longest Season-Opening Point Streaks Since 1993-94:
Games Player Club Season
22 Dany Heatley Ottawa 2005-06
15 Jaromir Jagr Pittsburgh 1999-00
13 Henrik Zetterberg Detroit 2007-08 (active)
13 Ron Francis Pittsburgh 1994-95
SECOND STAR—PASCAL LECLAIRE, G, COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS
Leclaire posted a 6-2-0 record with a 1.25 goals-against average, .953 save percentage and four shutouts in eight games as Columbus posted the best start in franchise history (7-3-1). The Blue Jackets’ first-round draft pick (eighth overall) in 2001, Leclaire allowed one goal or fewer in six of eight games, including shutouts against Anaheim Oct. 5, Phoenix Oct. 10, Buffalo Oct. 19 and St. Louis Oct. 25. Leclaire already is one shutout from tying the single-season franchise record, set by Marc Denis in 2002-03 and 2003-04.
THIRD STAR—JAROME IGINLA, RW, CALGARY FLAMES
Iginla ranked second among NHL scorers with 19 points (eight goals, 11 assists) in 12 games as Calgary (6-3-3, 15 points) finished the month second in the Northwest Division. The Flames captain recorded six multiple-point games, including three-point efforts Oct. 16 in Colorado, Oct. 20 against Edmonton, Oct. 24 versus Minnesota and Oct. 30 against Nashville. Iginla recorded points in nine of 12 games and figured in 45% of the Flames’ 42 goals.
