Odds Of Making The Playoffs

Even though the Calgary Flames hold a one point lead over the Detroit Red Wings for the last playoff spot in the West, it is actually the Wings who have better odds to make the playoffs.

“There are three types of lies - lies, damn lies, and statistics.”
Variously attributed to Benjamin Disraeli, Mark Twain & others.

What those graphs don’t show is the “heart” a team is playing with. IMHO, the Wings would be way below 50% if you could chart that right now.

And the person I’m most disappointed in is Capt. Nick. He keeps regurgitating the same BS after every loss. It goes something like: “I don’t know why we haven’t been very consistent but we know we have to be better.”

Well, no sh!t, Sherlock. We all know that. What we need is for you to channel the spirit of Stevie Y and find a way to actually get better.

Wings catch the Flames on the 2nd night of a back-to-back Monday night (Flames play the Canucks Sunday night in Vancouver which are always intense games).

I’m a Flames fan, but I respect and admire the Wings as well.  This is a fun time of year.

Thanks for posting this Paul.  That’s an cool point.

4 explanations come to mind:

1.  Sim thinks Wings are “stronger”.  (Nope, the pythag column says it actually thinks the Flames are stronger. )
2.  Wings hold a tiebreaker advantage that is likely to come into play.  (Nope,  if that was the driving force then they would be ahead on the 50-50 version too, buy they aren’t.)
3.  Wings have a much easier remaining schedule.
4.  You found a bug.

I think it’s mostly #3, that the Wings have an easier stretch run.

Another factor, though, is that they still have two games left against Nashville.  There’s a not insignificant chance of those games going to OT, which would really hurt the Flames’ chances.

The Capitals can actually clinch a playoff birth tonight.  Has there ever been a division as bad as the SOUTHEAST?  There is 33 points behind first and second place.  The teams in the Southeast always seem to lose their quality players like Kovalchuk and Bouwmeester.

The capitalls could actually sit and rest all their star players and still make the top 3 in the standings without doing anything.
