Oh, This Should Be Fun

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,

I know you’ve got my back out there, Avaholics, and I have a favor to ask: follow me on twitter. My handle is adater (imaginative I know), and by getting me to 1,000 followers by Thursday, you’ll not only make me feel good, but you’ll make a bitter Red Wings crank blogger out there feel really bad. Who’s with me?

At last check, I’m up to 823 followers. A couple days ago, I put out a tweet saying if I didn’t get to 1,000 followers by Thursday, I’d quit twitting. As many of you know, I have a sarcastic side, and I actually meant the tweet as a joke.

But some stuffshirt Wings blogger by the name of “iwocpo” from the site “Kukla’s Korner” took it as a personal affront (this is probably the same tough guy who likes to make fun of somebody’s mother and sister and a guy who almost died from a sucker punch by one of his Old Wings players (You know the one, Mr. It Is What It Is) and has started an “unfollow” campaign on me). Yawn.

continued and Adrian, his blog is Abel to Yzerman and it can be found here...

added 6:42pm, IwoCPO responds.

Well, it seems Dater has finally found a media stream which precisely fits the amount of substance he brings to the table in most of his articles.

100 characters, give or take.

Wow. 1000 followers. Where’s one of those “You win a prize!” jpegs?

Interestingly, there are also exactly 1000 registered cross-dressers in Denver.

Coincidence?

Uh-oh, the gloves have been dropped. I like Adrian but I fear for him going up against “The Chief”...

Even if I was an Av fan (sweet Jeebus, I shudder at the thought), I wouldn’t read a single utterance from this tool.  Seems they’ll let anyone write a book these days.

I think the most amusing thing about this is that Dater thinks Twitter’s actually worth time if he hits 1000 followers.

Really?  A whole thousand?

Well, sure, when you only have 5 or 6 hundred people reading your blog a thousand might seem like a lot, but man.

As an Avs fan, allow me to agree. Just because I love the team doesn’t mean I have to like Dater. He seems to get confused between the Avalanche and himself, and which is more important.

Dater decided he didn’t completely stand by his words, and edited his blog post to be less incendiary.

This is what passes for sports writing these days? Give me Jack Falla any day. Hell, give me a beat writer any day. Dater is getting ridiculous.

Edit the blog without a mention of the edit is not good Tapeleg.

No, it’s not. This is why WordPress (which is what I use, and also what the Post uses for it’s blogs) has a “draft” button. So you can look things over, and maybe even calm down before pushing publish.

But you know what? He’s going to get away with it. No one will call him on it, and he hasn’t held himself to those standards. As far as I can tell, no one at the Post does either.

Of course, the edit is only the start. Such as taking down any mention of his NBA-women-shouldn’t-call-games post (even the apology) like it never happened.

Internet tough guys=fail.

Why does everything have to be a pissing contest.  In a pissing contest nobody wins…especially when it’s windy out.

The sad thing is that this is the kind of sportswriter that drives people to blogs.  If the newspapers provided good solid writing, well done analysis, and really insightful articles the writers wouldn’t need to feel insecure about bloggers because they would know that their readers would be there for the quality product.

If all they provide is poorly written slipshod analysis with the intellectual depth of a parking lot puddle, then of course readers are going to leave for an alternative because they find better more informative writing elsewhere.

(And I don’t do Twitter or Facebook or anything like that, but 1000 followers seems pretty anemic when there are so many people on Twitter to choose from.)
