from TSN,
Kitchener Rangers’ defenceman Ben Fanelli is listed in critical but stable condition in Hamilton General hospital after being injured by a devastating hit during Friday night’s OHL game between the Rangers and Erie Otters.
The 16-year old Fanelli was rushed to Grand River Hospital in Kitchener then airlifted to Hamilton General after being driven into the endboards by Erie’s Michael Liambas half way through the second period.

Couldn’t see that the puck was anywhere near the play. Also how did his helmet come off causing the face to hit the boards? Juniors wear face shields and helmets, they should never come off due to a check, this would have prevented the fractured orbital bone and possible skull fracture. Hockey needs to crack down on loose chin straps, even if some players think it is cool!

Timbits, the puck was on his stick a fraction of a second before the hit. He throws it around the boards to his right.
Not a pretty sight, but that looks pretty clean to me. The hitter doesn’t take a stride in the clip, but I guess it could possibly be a charge. The elbows are down, his feet are on the ice. If the player doesn’t spin last second it’s a play you see dozens of times every night.

the player absolutely turned at the last second. it seems the new way players are “protecting” themselves is to turn their back to a checker and count on the fact that boarding is illegal. stupid.
hopefully he is going to be ok, that looked really nasty.
did anyone notice that right at the end when the kids teammate came to his defense the guy who checked him absolutely levels that guy too?

I do see it now that you point it out. Seems the ejection was for injury not the actual check, which isn’t the right way to deal with these things. The NHL has the injury standard too, which leads to inconsistent calls based on if someone is taken off on a stretcher.

I hope everything turns out for the best. I hope I don’t sound rude by writing this, but the player did the worst possible thing there by turning his back. Players are taught to go with the momentum of the hit. Hopefully everything turns out okay.
